"Support The Troops"? Tyranny & Standing Armies

The Marine Corps has been incorporating elements from civilian firearm competition into their training:
They're working to emphasize modern marksmanship in fast-paced combat where civilians mingle with warfighters and Marines often must engage multiple moving targets in tight, urban settings.
... includes shoot/no-shoot scenarios, photo-realistic targets, shot placement, and firing from long to short ranges as if closing with the enemy. It tests a Marine's ability to neutralize multiple exposed threats.
... designed to incorporate more relevant combat skills into a "combat-centric" course of fire earlier in a Marine's training.
... So far, the feedback has been positive.
Because the [training] forces individual shooters to choose the best shooting position whether kneeling, prone, standing or sitting to engage targets at various distances, "It lets that individual Marine understand his range and what position he is effective in at that range," said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Vincent Kyzer, the 1st Marine Division gunner.

Upon the posting of this article on Facebook by a friend, and after reading it, I commented:
I think the military has a lot to learn from civilian practical shooting competitions. In many ways, we civvies have outpaced them, and Constitutionally, that is very good.
My friend had a series of questions on my comments.  I will designate his questions with "Q:", and my answers with "Backwoods:".

Q: "Constitutionally, that is very good" ?

Backwoods: Yes, so argued the Founders.  The people themselves are to be armed, trained ("well-regulated"), and useful in ad-hoc armies that the Founders called "the militia".  The Founders did not like the idea of large professional armies; they viewed them as supporting tyranny, and believed the people themselves should be better armed and trained than any regular army:

Tench Coxe:
The militia, who are in fact the effective part of the people at large, will render many troops quite unnecessary. They will form a powerful check upon the regular troops, and will generally be sufficient to over-awe them.
Noah Webster:
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States.
Boston: DHS gunman
targets civilians
Backwoods: Despite the grave danger the Founders foresaw in standing armies, they are now everywhere in America, in every state capitol, and in every city small and large. The strength, in arms and number of men, of the police forces and domestically-barracked troops would have horrified the Founders.  Webster's supposition is now completely turned on its head in most of America, especially in the large disarmed cities in so-called "blue" states: regular troops (military and police) are now better armed and more numerous than the general militia (the armed public).

Q: So a weak military is good for the Republic?

Backwoods: Weak internally, yes. So the Founders argued.

Q: What's the difference between internal weakness and external weakness?

Backwoods:   The US military was originally conceived as an outward-facing organization, focused on the defense of the US, or the neutralizing of imminent external, national-level threats.    It was never supposed to do the job of the militia.

Recall the story about Jefferson sending the Marines to Tripoli to neutralize the threat of the Islamists who were attacking US-flagged ships on the high seas .(Sound familiar?  They're back!)  That's an example of the original intent.

I support a strong US military--strongly defending the borders of the US and her citizens abroad.  (We don't defend our borders anymore.)  In keeping with the Founders militia ideal, I do not support a large military; their concept was a small-core military that in time of war would require the President federalizing individual militia units-- National Guard units for example-- to supplement their numbers and capabilities for a specific conflict.  For each conflict the commanders should, ideally, have a well-defined victory in view.

The military was not supposed to act on the American people themselves; to have them do so is a prelude to tyranny. The Founders knew it, but we ignored their warnings, to our peril. USNORTHCOM, a US military command designed to operate primarily in the US homeland, would be viewed by them as an abomination, despite their complaints of being limited by the Posse Comitatus Act.

The Founders would also see a despicable standing army in the modern mechanized, jackbooted, SWATized police forces, local, state and Federal, including the latter's so-called "Department of Homeland Security".  The latter is presumably the apparatus that then-candidate Obama was referring to when he expressed a desire for an armed force "just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the US military.  The only use of such a force is the advancement of a political agenda against a resistant population through the use of force.  And indeed, there is a long history of the FBI and BATF tyranny: spying on citizens, attacking them for the political views, seizing their property, rousting and even killing them over so-called "weapons charges" that amount to the length of a block of wood.

If you read the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers, you'll see the militia discussed throughout.  Their concept was the raising of temporary armies from a well-armed people, for specific purposes, such as the apprehension of dangerous criminals or gangs of criminals, the suppressing of insurrections, and other internal threats, including (by Constitutional sanction) the defense of a State's border with another country during an imminent threat of invasion that the Federals cannot immediately respond to. (You know, like Texas being invaded by drug lords on and off for the last thirty years.).

Ever watch and old Western movie and hear talk of "raising a posse?"  That's the militia. Those people might have been paid for that temporary duty, but they were supposed to already have weapons and ammunition on hand.   They're supposed to be trained in the use of arms, and in small-unit tactics, too.  (This used to be taught to the men of the general population.) You can't raise an army from among the people or resist tyranny if they are mostly a bunch of disarmed sheep; that's what the 2nd Amendment is all about.

These militia armies were to do a specific duty, then return to their lives as civilians.  They weren't to be professional soldiers like many of the police forces now are, because a professional soldier who gets used to projecting State-sanctioned force will eventually be asked impose the will of the State on citizens, a good working definition of tyranny.

And it has happened here already.  Some examples that come to mind are the Boston Lockdown of 2013, the FBI and ATF at Waco and Ruby Ridge, The Battle Of Athens TN, The Bonus Army, and the various Indian relocations, including the Cherokee Trail of Tears.

The resurgence in gun ownership, interest in the gun as an instrument of liberty, and a new emphasis in training and competition with firearms are all very encouraging indicators of potential for freedom in this Republic.  I think modern IPSC, USPSA, and 3-gun competitors would do very well on militia duty, especially those familiar with rifles.

Yes, government tyranny is encroaching in many areas of American life, but we are the only country in the world that has over 100 million armed citizens.   That counts for a lot.

M855: Stop Freaking Out, and Oppose This Rationally

SS109 / M855: not "armor piercing", and not actually banned yet
Well, The Washington Examiner got the hype started, and Fox News followed, but I've seen this
piece all over Facebook today:

Obama to Ban Bullets by Executive Action, Threatens the Most Popular Ammo

Oh, noes!!!!!!  No more boolits?  No.  There might be a ban, but it's not that bad.  Really.
After President Obama and his Democratic colleagues in Congress failed to accomplish their anti-gun agenda through the legislative process, they’re now turning to the only other avenue left to them: executive action.
And the popular AR-15 looks to be the most significant casualty.
From The Washington Examiner
It’s starting.
As promised, President Obama is using executive actions to impose gun control on the nation, targeting the top-selling rifle in the country, the AR-15 style semi-automatic, with a ban on one of the most-used AR bullets by sportsmen and target shooters.
Y'all know Ol' Backwoods not going to defend this lawless, Constitution-despising administration,
but this story is full of hyperbole like that.  Up in the holler I'm from, this article would be called "a pack of lies".

Get it straight, people: the Obamites are NOT banning all .223 or 5.56 mm ammunition. They are not banning possession of anything (in fact, Ol' Backwoods himself got that wrong the other day).

The ATF has proposed the ban on manufacture and sale for civilian use of military-surplus ammunition, containing a 62-grain projectile (bullet) with a steel penetrator in front of a lead core, referred to by the military as M855, also called SS109 . Look, it's not any more armor-piercing than any other 5.56mm bullet is; at 3000 - 3500 feet per second, almost ANYTHING pierces soft body armor. Regardless, there's no reason under the stupid "Cop Killer" Boowits law (which Reagan signed) to ban it, because M855 has a lead core.

Maybe we can beat this ban back, and maybe we can't.   But articles like this are causing people to think all AR-15 ammo is banned, and they freak out and  buy up any 5.56 ammo they can get like there is no tomorrow, causing shortages for months and months to come.

THIS IS STUPID, PEOPLE! Get a grip on reality!

There's still time to comment to the ATF.  There's a petition on that even Ol' Backwoods signed.  What's that?  Don't want to end up on a "government list"?  Hey, we're ALL already on a government list, called "Form 4473s".  What's another?

Still, yes, the Obamites are doing everything they can to either disarm us, or to piss us off.  But when democracy turns to tyranny, the armed citizen still gets to vote.  Noah Webster's quote from the Founding era comes to mind:
Armed citizen voting NAY to tyranny (Bundy Ranch 2013)
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States.
--Noah Webster in `An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution', 1787, a pamphlet aimed at swaying Pennsylvania toward ratification, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at 56 (New York, 1888).

Mark This Day

This is the day the Republic died.
It just isn't in the casket yet.  Soros is working on that, though.
(From Conservative Treehouse)

“I believe the next 20 months we are going to see a degree of lawlessness that will exceed anything we’ve seen in the previous six years,” he continued. “I think we’re going to see executive order after executive order. I think we’re going to see the abuse of regulations in a way that crushes small businesses, destroys jobs. I think we are going to see the continued weaponization of the IRS in the federal government, and it is going to be dangerous.”
So, what are you doing about it, Sen. Cruz?

Two Meat Buffet

A few years ago, Ol' Backwoods used to lease part of my late grandmother's 135-acre place in southern West Virginia, for use as hunting land.  I had cameras all over that place, and got some amazing pictures.  Because I moved so far away, down to 'Bama, I don't get to hunt it anymore.

After my 0-kills-for-19-hunts deer season this year, and with turkey season coming up, I am sure missing my grandmother's place.    I never, ever saw anything like this on the deer lease I huntedthe 2014-2015 season.

That's good eatin'.

Here's another, from the same time frame:

Nice sized doe, and a couple fawns that I bet are grown up now.  They were browsing on the edge of a clearing, right in front of my camera, to which they were utterly oblivious.

Backwoods Amateur Radio Net: U.L. Rohde, Paperless, and EchoLink!

We had 19 checkins last night on the Backwoods amateur radio net.  We had 16 checkins that were short-time or mobile, and 3 stayed to chat a bit in our ragchew segment.

We had quite a VHF propagation enhancement last night, no doubt a result of warm, moist air next to the ground.  We had a checkin from an amateur about 60 miles northeast of us, up in Georgia.  It happens that way sometimes; to know the conditions, you have to listen frequently.

We also discussed one of our local hams creating an EchoLink node, with a transceiver on our repeater's input and output frequencies.  This allows hams who are out of the area, and who are on the "whitelist" to use their iPhone or Android phone to talk on the repeater.  I look forward to using this to listen to our local repeater when I am behind our RF-blocking metal walls at work!  We do have internal Wifi, which will make EchoLink work.

In the net's amateur radio headlines segment last night, I noted that one of our own club members had placed in state rankings in the ARRL 2014 September VHF Contest.  Also, I noted that the FCC's "Paperless" Amateur Radio License was now in effect.

From the ARRL website:
Starting February 17, the FCC no longer routinely issues paper license documents to Amateur Radio applicants and licensees. The Commission maintains that the official Amateur Radio license authorization is the electronic record that exists in its Universal Licensing System (ULS). [...]
The FCC will continue to provide paper license documents to all licensees who notify the Commission that they prefer to receive one.
The article did not say how to contact the FCC to get a paper license, although it did say you could print one off their ULS website.

And finally, I just had to read some news about an amateur radio operator and professional engineer who has been an Elmer to me, and a lot of other RF engineers.  His books and receiver design have taught me a great deal, and nearly daily in my job, I use equipment that bears his name, particularly spectrum and RF network analyzers.

Ulrich Rohde, N1UL, Wins Second Prestigious IEEE Award

Ulrich Rohde, N1UL, has been named by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to receive the prestigious I. I. Rabi Award for 2015. The award recognizes outstanding contributions related to the fields of atomic and molecular frequency standards, and time transfer and dissemination. The author of some 200 scientific papers and books, including several [articles in amateur radio journals] QEX and QST [...]
Rohde was cited specifically for “intellectual leadership, selection, and measurement of resonator structures for implementation in high-performance frequency sources, essential to the determination of atomic resonance.”   [...]
Rohde is the chairman of Synergy Microwave Corporation and President of Communications Consulting Corporation.  [...]
“I am really in disbelief and overwhelmed by this totally unexpected honor close to my 75th birthday,” Rohde said in thanking [the Awards Chair]. “Not even in my wildest dreams would I have assumed to deserve this important scientific award. Since the age of 16, I have been fascinated with oscillators as well as their performance and their influence on atomic standards. Some of the results of my research are still the basis of all really high-performance oscillators.”
Rohde and I have several things in common, including becoming interested in oscillators as a teenager, and working as RF receiver design engineers.  But this man is my great mentor; I do not think I could ever approach his intellect or his achievements.  Still, he is an inspiration.

If you are interested in amateur radio, and the great traditions we have, please go to to learn more.

The Bullets They Came For; Or, I Think They Shoot Cuz They Want It

First they came for the steel-core 7.62x39, and I did not speak out—
Because I did not shoot steel-core 7.62x39.
They they came for the 7n6, and I did not speak out—
Because I did not shoot 7n6.
Then they came for the M855, and I did not speak out—
Because I did not shoot M855.
Then they came for my calibers and finally, for my guns—
And there was no one left to speak for me

-- with respect & apologies to Lutheran pastor and anti-Nazi Martin Niemöller.

Speak out now, friends.  Liberty is slipping away.

Progressives' Tower of Babel

Tower of Babel (Vienna, via Wikipedia)
Real truth is timeless.  Eric Hoffer's "True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of
Mass Movements" is full of timeless truth.  Listen to this passage, from his introduction, and think how today's "Progressives" bitterly cling (heh) to the twin false premises of their faith:
Even the sober desire for progress is sustained by faith-- faith in the intrinsic goodness of human nature and in the omnipotence of science.
It is a defiant and blasphemous faith, not unlike that held by the men who set out to build "a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven" and who believed that "nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do."
Both of these premises are false.  But most of the American political scene today are based on them.

Men are not intrinsically good.  They were made perfect originally, but we are fallen, and need the redemption of He who made us in order to become what we should have been.

Science is not omnipotent.  It isn't even omniscient.  Most of the time, these days, science isn't even experimental.  It whispers comforting mendacities to itself, in an attempt to avoid a conclusion the size of a gorilla in the room: a Great Mind created the heavens and the earth, and if He be a mind, we are as His Creation accountable to Him.

Chuck Schumer Is An Alien, or Just Provincial (CCL Reciprocity)

Is US Senator Chuck Schumer (ANTI-NY) even an American?  Does he even understand who the Founders were?  Has he ever been out of his provincial little hellhole where everybody thinks the peasants shouldn't have guns, but everyone has armed bodyguards?

Listen to this statement, regarding a proposed federal Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill.  Whether you agree with the legislation or not, listen to how alien this sounds to those of us who live in free states and know so many who carry concealed, and even carry ourselves.  This sounds like a linguine-spined surrender-monkey from France or formerly-Great Britain, where everyone is disarmed and enslaved.

Listen to this gibbering, doddering old tyrant kick against the goads of freedom!  (via my friend John Richardson of Polite Society Podcast and Only Guns and Money:)
“This bill is a menace to New York and would allow potentially dangerous people from other states to carry concealed weapons in our grocery stores, movie theaters and stadiums, without even notifying the police,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told the Daily News.
“It is a nightmare for our law enforcement officers and the community, and I will fight this legislation tooth and nail.”
Did y'all get that?

"...dangerous people from other states to carry concealed weapons in our grocery stores!"

"Without notifying the police!"

Ol' Backwoods should have notified the police, I guess, when I stopped at the gas station in Georgia to take a whiz!?  Mrs. Backwoods should have notified the police when she was out shopping in our little town today!?  Backwoods Jr. should have notified the police before going to the auto parts store when his truck broke down in Virginia!?

By Chucky's lights, we should have notified The Authoritah! when we were all carrying a g-g-g-gun (horrors!) concealed (double horrors!) while visiting these places of business!

Miracle of miracles, NOBODY GOT SHOT!  How is that possible, Senator Schumer?  I mean, hey, when your Noo Yawk City "Only Ones" go after a suspect, 8 or 9 people get shot!

And people like Schumer think we are the provincials.

You oughta get out more, Chucky.  People in the free states carry every single day.  We are the safest, lowest-crime segment of society.  By and large, we are safer people than the police, I would daresay.  The police should notify us that they are carrying!

Get Off My Porch! (Of Media Gatekeepers & Freedom)

I normally like the Z-man's blog, but today, he is cranky.  Get-off-my-porch-see-my-Garand-cranky.  Look, I gotta quote a good bit of his blog to set this up.  Don't put a clip in that Garand, there, Z-man.
I’m old enough to remember a time when the average home had three TV channels and a few radio stations. Some people had more than one newspaper, but in many towns it was one paper with maybe multiple editions through the day. ... [My father] was a working man so he read the evening paper. Salary men read the morning paper.
The point here is that it was not that long ago when mass media was a narrow pipe allowing for few voices. In order to get on TV, you had a long apprenticeship. That meant most of lunatics were weeded out before they got in front of a camera. Newspaper columnists spent years covering local stories, writing obituaries and following cops around town reporting on crime stories. Getting a column was a big deal and reserved for middle-aged men who could be trusted to keep it between the ditches, even if they drank at breakfast.
The communications revolution has made the pipe infinity larger. So much so that anyone with a little initiative can reach a broad audience. The trouble is the number of responsible, sensible people is fixed. That means the pipe is now full of nuts and morons hooting and bellowing at us, drowning out the few intelligent voices. The megaphone is now in the hands of the dumbest members of society.
Z-man goes on to rightfully complain about the Huffington Post (which I do not and will not link) and its highly-biased coverage of a juiced-up Alabama police officer who slammed an old Indian (dot not feather) man on the ground.  Yeah, it sucks, but the police officer was fired and arrested for assault, as he should have been.

Z-man considers the nutty HuffPoster's screed and concludes:
...He’s [(the Huffposter]) probably harmless, but giving him a platform to broadcast his brand of crazy is irresponsible. When you’re trying to fill that huge pipe with content, however, you quickly run out of sane people and have no choice but to dip into the lunatic bucket.
There’s no mechanism in modern societies to deal with this phenomenon. Maybe people just ignore it all, but I doubt it. The downward drift of public discourse in the last three decades suggests the coarsening is proportional to the size of the pipe. The above story was on the front page of Yahoo today, which is why I noticed it. Some number of sensible people will read that nonsense and think it is legitimate.
"Giving him a platform?"  What is this, Soviet Russia?

I know!  I know!  We should go back to the "good old days" when Cronkite told us "that's the way it is", and we had three channels on TV and two newspapers a day, and the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency!  Then, we'd have some powerful gatekeepers to keep these "nut jobs" from being able to speak their minds!  And, we could get some good legislation in, like the Gun Control Act of 1968!  /sarc

No, thanks.  I like our way better: HuffPo gets to have their nutjobs, and I get to write what I want on my little blog for my readership, and so do you, Z-man.

Freedom is a good thing, even if the stupids at HuffPo use it for evil.

And Z-man, I would have posted these comments at your site, but it kept telling me I was a spammer.  I am not.

Talking Head: Christians Just As Violent As Head-Chopping Muslims

On today's Morning Joe, Scarborough twice suggested such parallels, analogizing radical Islamists to "ultrafundamentalist Christians who believe every single word of the Bible has to be interpreted in the exact ways which could also lead to some violence." A bit later, Scarborough circled back, saying "it doesn't matter what faith you're in," that a literal reading of scripture attracts the outcasts of society, for better or "for much worse."
Right, Joe Scarborough.  That shows how little you know about the Bible, and about most Christians.

In fact, the sad thing is, the total opposite is true: most Christians are so incredibly, door-mat pacifist that they believe it is a sin for a Christian to get a concealed carry license, and that it is murder to defend their and/or their family's lives with a firearm.

These pacifist Christians believe it is more righteous for a Christian woman to be gang-raped and strangled to death with her own pantyhose than to defend herself with a gun.

As a Christian who believes in the fundamental right of self-defense, this is sickening to me.   If your brand of Christianity involves my wife being raped and murdered while I stand there defenseless, I want absolutely nothing to do with it.

M855 Ammo: Arbitrary Bans are the very Definition of Tyranny

According to the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms has announced that within a month, they will ban the manufacture, sales, and possession of a common variety of AR-15 ammunition, with a 62-grain bullet containing a mild steel penetrator, known as M855 or SS109.  (More at the Cheaper than Dirt Blog, Sebastian, and

Naturally, as soon as the news was out, sources all over the country dried up.

As Bob Owens of Bearing Arms puts it:
Last April, the ATF used an identical argument to create an ban on the importation of surplus and newly manufactured 7N6 ammunition, which allowed shooters of 5.45×39 caliber rifles to target shoot cheaply.
They are now attempting to do the same with the most common rifle in the United States.
This cannot be allowed to stand.
Indeed, we must resist this.

What is the ATF's explanation for this tyrannical and arbitrary ruling from the minions of President "High Horse"?  Why, they are just following the "sporting purpose" clause in the Gun Control Act of 1968, and using an "executive action" to "protect the police".

Excuse Ol' Backwoods for a minute; just quoting that tyrannical, unconstitutional verbiage makes me so nail-spitting mad at the Communist-Democrat Congress and President who passed that Nazi-influenced, gallows-worthy act of Congress, that I have to stop to allow the blood rushing to the "rage against injustice" centers of my fertile mind to recede, and my powers of rational thinking to return.

I'm back.

Look, the bullet design in M855/SS109 ammo ain't that good a mankiller anyway.  It makes a long, narrow wound channel, which prolongs suffering and delays death.  There are better bullets for killing men, including some that are sold as ammo for killing whitetail deer.  There are other bullets, still sold, that are better at penetrating car doors.

None of that is the point.

A government so powerful and arbitrary that it can, without a specific act of Congress, ban a specific type of ammunition can pretty much do anything it wants to any citizen, and that citizen has no possible avenue for the redress of grievances.  They could dry up the ammo supply for the 5 million American-owned AR-15 with just the stroke of a pen.  It's all 'legal', you see, just like Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Courts, asset forfeiture by the IRS and the US Marshals Service, shutting down farms and seizing land by the so-called Environmental Protection Agency when even a tiny wet spot is filled in, and dozens and dozens of other examples that my readers know, being keen and cynical observers of this out-of-control Government.

Last year, it was 5.45mm ammo.  Today, it's M855 5.56 ammo.  Next, it could be the more-common, 55-grain XM193 ammunition, and poof, the AR-15 market is gone because it's too expensive to shoot on the weekends.

This is how tyranny works: incremental evil.  The Beast never sleeps.  While you are trying to make a living, enjoy your life and your freedom, and raise your children, they are out there, ever second of every day, trying to take it all away from you.

I'm telling you, this is NOT the kind of government the Apostle Paul is talking about in Romans 13.  And if it is, well, sorry, I still must resist.

From the ATF document:
The application of the “sporting purposes” exemption must be consistent with the goals of the statute: to protect law enforcement officers. That is, the Attorney General must determine that a specific type of armor piercing projectile does not pose a significant threat to law enforcement officers because the projectile at issue is “primarily intended” for use in shooting sports, and is therefore unlikely to be encountered by law enforcement officers on the streets.
This is nothing but bullcrap six ways from Sunday.  Sheer idiocy!  It completely ignores the Constitution's concept of the militia, which the people themselves, and completely ignores the right of the people's militia to keep and own militia weapons, which was well-established in Miller v. US (1934).  Also, what dunderhead believes that just because ammunition is for "sporting purposes", that the police will never "encounter [it] ... on the streets!"  What about every other bullet and cartridge sold in gun stores?  Do thugs never fire any of that at cops?

And it wholly ignores the issue that ALL rifle ammunition, above a certain muzzle velocity, is "armor-piercing".  My 1942 Mosin Nagant-- a rifle whose design is 97 years old-- will punch 7.62-mm holes in ANY soft body armor, all day, every day, and twice on Sunday.  Is Mosin Nagant ammo banned as "armor piercing"?

No, 7.62x54R cannot be fired by the #1 most-popular rifle in the United States, of which there are MILLIONS of examples in the hands of the civilian militia, which the government has made clear they greatly fear.

It has no basis in reality, but nobody ever calls them on this crap.  And when we do, our little voices are drowned out by the Government's wholly-owned propoganda machine, the Mainstream Media, namely, ABC-CBS-NBC-CNN-MSNBC-New-York-Times and all their sycophants.

So, what do we do?  Well, there is a comment period coming up, but when has the ATF ever reversed course on a ruling due to comments?

Probably the only thing we can really do that will have any effect is to DEFY and RESIST them.  I've got M855, and I plan on keeping it.  Judging from sales, you've got M855, too.  Hang on to it.  Not because it's a great self-defense or hunting round, but simply because they don't want us to have it, and have arbitrarily banned something that my taxes have already paid for, that supports an enumerated Constitutional right: the right to keep and bear arms.

UPDATE: Mike Vanderboegh's salacious and insulting comments about those of us who tried to get out the word about ATF's ban of M855:
Any moron who doesn't mind embarrassing himself can masturbate in public -- and that's all this is is verbal masturbation for the emotionally-uncontrolled and synapse-challenged. Personally, I would rather they took their impotent meat-beating into the closet where they won't embarrass the rest of us by claiming that we're with them.
Whose side are you on, Mike?

I Will Not Bow at the Shrine of the State

American governments no longer simply praises good and punishes evil (Romans 13:3-5).  American governments, at all scales from Federal to municipal are now full of active evil.   These governments demand nothing less than worship, and that I cannot abide.

I will not worship the almighty State, regardless of the gentle encouragements of the nightly news, or the twisting of the Scriptures by deluded Christians, who deceive themselves that our government cannot be any worse than the one to which the Apostle Paul enjoined obedience.

I will not.

I will not depend on government for my security, my sustenance or my feeling of well-being.

I will not.

Given the results in other places around the world of other peoples doing so, I will not surrender my arms, to which I have a God-given right, to any government infringement, whether it has been voted in by the majority, or not.

I will not.

If I can, I will flee jurisdictions who seek to exact from me more taxes, and not engage in commerce that brings such about.   I will not pay any more taxes, fees, honors, or duties to the State than I am bound by law to pay.

I will not.

I will not bow at the Shrine of the State.

I will not.

"Arming Against The Government?" Maybe We SHOULD Be!

Boy, these nancy-boy domestic enemies of the Constitution really know how to get Ol' Backwoods' goat.  They know how to turn me plumb, downright losing-my-religion, mad-dog mean.  From The Hill, a newspaper in the District of Criminals:

A half-dozen Democrats who are longtime gun control champions ...a new bill that would vastly restrict ammunition capacities.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday touted the bill, which would ban
magazines of more than 10 rounds... Murphy stressed that he has not met “a single hunter or a single person who hunts for sport” who needs more than 10 rounds.  [You know, I cain't find the word "hunt" in the 2nd Amendment. --B.E.]
He said those who wanted high-capacity magazines were more interested in “arming against the government.”

I'm sorry, Lord, but this enemy of my family and my people I am having a hard time loving!

Hey, Murphy, you little metrosexual tyrant, what about the government that is arming against me, and HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of my fellow citizens who are gun owners?

"Arming against the government!"  While BILLIONS of rounds are being stockpiled by the 'Department of Homeland Security!  To shoot whom?  Oh, your "fusion centers" have told us!  Gun owners!  Ron Paul voters! "Preppers!"

"Arming against the government!"  When every police force from Montgomery to Birmingham has tanks, personnel carriers, and machine guns, given to them by the US of A government!  I know-- I downloaded the publicly-available lists of equipment!

And this sniveling nancy boy has the audacity to say this after the US government BURNED over one hundred citizens ALIVE in Waco, Texas?

You want to come and take our "high-capacity" magazines?  Come on, you half-pint tyrant!  You want a civil war?  You're going to start one, aren't you?

"Arming against the government!"  People, I want a divorce.  I no longer want to be in the same country as Connecticut, land of metrosexual gun-grabbers.  Go away from me and mine, and leave us be.

And now that I see that my government is arming against us, maybe we ought to be "ARMING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT", you fair-haired sawed-off little fairy, because you and the rest of the US government have exceeded your Constitutional bounds about 100 times over.

My forefathers, who brought this republic about, were sure enough "arming against the government" and its tyranny.  And the government that replaced King George now makes him look like a piker in the tyranny department.

Excuse me, Ol' Backwoods has got to go buy some more ammo, and "high-capacity" magazines.

And go do some shooting to calm down.

NY Slimes Really Hates Alabama! Can We Have a Divorce?

From a thread of FreeRepublic last night, as regards this Noo Yawk Times slam on Alabama:
A country that has descended to such depths of degeneracy, where its government legally and culturally equates two perverted homos as being the same as a husband-and-wife, is no longer a republic I’d hold any particular interest in preserving.
Can't say I disagree.

Based on His dealings with mankind thus far, I believe America will come under severe judgement by God.  I do not expect this republic to endure as such much longer.  But God always preserves a remnant, and He knows where His servants are.  I know one place where they are numerous: Alabama.  Which is really why the hags at the New York Times howl against us.

I hear "conservatives" talking all the time about "taking their country back".  That ship has sailed.  I'm sorry to say, it it isn't our country anymore; it has been taken over by alien forces, and forced to do their bidding.   Like Ronald Reagan said of the Democrat Party, I didn't leave my country; my country left me.  And it betrayed all other white Christians, too.  As was evidenced the other day by , the leadership of the United States*  actively despises all Christians, but especially white Christians.   I hear more and more that those in power also despise Jews who actually believe in God and try to serve Him.
Obama's tantrum at the National Prayer Breakfast

If this were not true, why the sudden, powerful push to normalize a demonic caricature of true marriage, the fruitless groupings of women abusing one another, or of males drowning the seed of life in a cavity of death, and twisting the minds of children, through the same abuse of their bodies?  May the Lord deal with them all, ever so severely.

All this is but an extension of Satan's war against God.  We just happen to live in occupied territory, behind enemy lines, as C.S. Lewis called it.
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;
Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
— Isaiah 5:20
*Note that "United States" has been considered singular since the end of the War of Northern Aggression.  That is because Lincoln and his political descendants have sought to put an end to the States as sovereign entities.

Backwoods Ham Radio Net: Sunspotless DX & Receiving an RF Alternator from Sweden

Last night on the ham radio net of which Ol' Backwoods is control operator, we had 20 checkins of local ham radio operators, two of which I had not heard before.  I have taken to announcing the net on our ham radio club's Facebook page, just a few minutes before the net starts, so maybe word is getting out.

We had 3 in our ragchew segment tonight; the rest of the checkins were "short-time" or mobile.

Our discussion topics tonight included sunspots and their effect on ham radio signal propagation, and a vintage VLF radio station in Sweden that is firing up its alternator for World Radio Day.

A World Without Sunspots?

Sunspots: can we communicate
without them?
Some solar scientists are predicting that the sun may be sunspot-free in a few years, at the bottom of this solar cycle.    K7RA points out in this week's Solar Update at, that you can still communicate worldwide with no sunspots, just not as easily.

K7RA ran some predictions with W6ELprop with a theoretical zero sunspots, and found that on February 6 on a path from Michigan to Brazil would allow a twenty-five percent chance of communication on 15 meters, from 1530-2000 UTC.  On 17 meters, an hour would be added on each end of that period. Twenty meters looked good, and of course 80, 40 and 30 meters looked quite promising. When he changed the date to March 22, the possibilities looked much better with zero sunspots.

What suffers with zero sunspots are 10 and 12 meters, which is familiar to those of us hams who remember the 10 meter band being "dead" at the bottom of the last solar cycle.

K7RA said, "But no sunspots should be fantastic for 160 meter propagation, with a smaller chance of geomagnetic disturbance disrupting communications."  Just goes to show that there is an amateur radio band for almost every kind of condition that allows worldwide communication, given correct timing, plenty of transmit power, and a lot of patience.

Last week on our net, we were talking about VLF transmissions, so this news item seems timely:
The Radio Station SAQ in Sweden plans to fire up its Alexanderson alternator on 17.2 kHz on the occasion of UNESCO World Radio Day, Friday, February 13. The station will begin tuning at 1430 UTC [8:30 AM Central Standard Time], and a message will be transmitted at 1500 UTC [9 AM CST].
Alexanderson Alternator - SAQ
The vintage SAQ Alexanderson alternator, dating from the 1920s, is essentially an ac alternator run at extremely high speed — can put out 200 kW but typically is operated at [about 80 kW]. Once providing reliable transatlantic communication, it is now a museum piece and only put on the air on special occasions.
According to the Alexanderson site,
The transmitter set consists in all essentials of three parts, the driving motor, a gear drive and the high frequency generator, commonly called the alternator. They are assembled on a solid base of steel. The weight of the complete transmitter set is about 50 tons. ...
The high frequency generator ... produce[s] a frequency of 17200 Hz, which is an extremely high frequency for rotating electrical machines. In order to keep the iron losses at a reasonable level, the stator is wound from very thin iron ribbon, unlike traditional alternating current machines, whose stators are constructed from iron sheets...
Also the rotor of the high frequency generator has a very different design. Normally, the rotor of an alternating current machine has a winding fed by DC (direct current) in order to achieve a rotating magnetic field in the stator. The rotor of the high frequency generator is a steel disc, 1.6 m in diameter and 7.5 cm thick at the periphery. The steel disc has no winding. Instead, 488 slots are milled at the periphery. The slots are filled with non-magnetic material (brass), in order to reduce the air friction.
The magnetic flux is generated by a field coil, situated outside the stator. The stator is designed to encircle the periphery of the rotor. The magnetic flux is conducted through the periphery of the rotor via the stator. The air gaps between the rotor disc and the stator are less than 1 mm wide. On the stator there are 64 armature windings that collect the variations of the magnetic flux. The variations arise when magnetic steel and non-magnetic material passes through the magnetic flux.
Each armature winding gives 100 V and 30 A, which is conducted to the output transformers.
An interesting detail on the high frequency generator is the device that keeps the rotor disc centered in the middle of the stator, independent of the changes of length of the rotor shaft as a result of varying temperature.
The driving motor is an induction motor with the power of 500 HP (about 370 kW). The stator is two- phase, which is extremely rare.  ...
Again, from the ARRL News item:
The transmitter was developed by Swedish engineer and radio pioneer Ernst Alexanderson, who was employed at General Electric in Schenectady, New York, and was chief engineer at the Radio Corporation of America.
Six 400+ foot towers with 150 foot crossarms support a multi-wire antenna for SAQ. The actual signal radiates from a vertical wire, one from each tower.
On the Net tonight, we discussed whether it might be possible to receive the 17.2 kHz station using a very long wire and a sound card and computer.  There were some skeptics, but, yes, it has been done before!

My high-quality sound card, a USB unit separate from the computer, claims a high-end 3dB cutoff frequency of 20 kHz.  That should be high enough to receive the station SAQ.  If I could record the "RF" using the sound card, I could use a sound-processing program to mix the 17.2 kHz "RF" with a 16.2 kHz synthetic tone (a "local oscillator"), producing a 1-kHz tone for the CW, that I could then bandpass filter.  This would allow me to hear the Morse code when the recording was played back to my computer speakers.

Or, I could just follow this website, hook my longwire to the sound card, and install the program SAQrx, a software defined VLF receiver by SM6LKM for the VLF band.    Here's the download link.  Below is a screenshot:

Here is a block diagram of SAQrx, from the PDF instructions that come with the download:

I downloaded the program, and ran SAQrx.exe, which is actually in the subdirectory "SM6LKM_JohanBodin".  The program had no problem at all with my sound card, and I could increase the noise level by touching the center conductor of the audio cable to my MIC input.

Since a half-wave dipole on 17.2 kHz would be around 8.7 km long-- no chance of that in the back yard! -- I might have a better chance with an active antenna. I'm definitely going to have to have the antenna and its amplifier outside, though, and bring in the amplified signal on a coax cable.

According to this website, a ham in Ohio has received SAQ with a 100-meter-long Zepp (end-fed) antenna at 22 feet; don't think I could manage something that big, but I bet a piece of wire or metal sheet oriented vertically, and a simple RF amp might work.

The SAQrx program has the ability to start recording after a pre-determined delay, and record for a specified time.   So, I can start it Friday morning before I go to work, then check the recording at lunchtime to see if I received the alternator at station SAQ!

There are several military transmitters in the SAQrx passband, so I should be able to see ahead of time if my active antenna is going to work.

I can't wait to try it!

UPDATE 2/13/15 well, I didn't to do it, but another ham did!

A Prayer for Healing

Our Father in Heaven,
Holy is your very name!

Though our Mediator,
Your Son, Jesus Christ, we come,
By Your invitation, our spirits speak to Your Holy Spirit,
Given to us as a seal of Your salvation,
Who interprets to You even the groanings
of our spirits which we can't put into words.
Lord, how much higher are your ways than ours!
How much grander is your will and purposes than ours!
Father, we see the future only dimly,
through the lens of our experiences.
You Lord as the Alpha and the Omega,
the Beginning and End.
Before you laid the foundation of this world,
Before you even created mankind,
You planned to save us through Christ from the sin that
You in Your infinite foreknowledge knew we would commit.
Father, we confess our sin to you.
We are a selfish people, full of fears, with not nearly enough faith.
We do believe!  Help our unbelief.  We depend on You
Cleanse us from our sins.
Forgive us, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Thank You for rescuing us from the kingdom of darkness,
and bringing us into the kingdom of your dear Son,
In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Father, You alone have qualified us to share in the inheritance of eternal life.
Fill us with the knowledge of your will,
through the wisdom Your Holy Spirit gives,
So that we may live lives pleasing to You, Lord;
So that we may produce a crop like a good field,
Bearing fruit in every good work.
By your glorious power, strengthen us with endurance and patience.
Thank you for placing us here, in a land of plenty.
Thank you for placing us in a time where many diseases can be treated
through discovery of the knowledge
You built into nature itself for us to find.
Great Physician, we ask you to heal the sick of our number,
According to your will.
Heal also the sicknesses of our spirits, our selfishness,
Our rebellion, our faithlessness.

We ask these things through the powerful name of Christ your Son,

(Prayed by me this day in Ol' Backwoods' country church of Christ.)

Obama's Declaration of War on Christians

Barack Hussein Obama, _resident of the United States lectured America the other day (h/t Cold Fury):
Unless we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.
From behind a smoke screen of perpetuating leftists lies about the Crusades, this guy is telling us who he really is; "coming out", if you like.  It's clear: he despises Christians.  He despises America, too, but as a madrassa-trained Muslim, Christians really get his goat.  (And please, I will delete all comments saying Obama is a Christian.  It is an affront to all Christians to propagate that lie.)

Look, if Emperor Zero is looking for somebody to compare to Muslims to make them not look so bad, he has a example, if he were willing to use it:  Communism and Communists have murdered many more people than those that claimed the name of Christ ever did.  Roger Simon, a Jewish commentator who does not have a dog in this hunt, makes this exact point:
Many faiths could be cited, including communism, obviously, also a kind of religion that was responsible for exponentially more deaths — via Stalin’s Gulag, Mao’s Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward, the killing fields of Cambodia, etc. — than all other belief systems combined, although none of them are doing it now. Right now it’s Islamic radicalism that just the other day placed a human being in a cage and burned him alive, an act not, to my knowledge, even performed by Dr. Mengele. And it was done in the name of Allah.
And yet Obama saw fit to lecture his audience on the Crusades and slavery, done “in the name of Christ,” subjects of which his audience was undoubtedly well aware and, needless to say, did not approve in the slightest. Yet still the president felt he had to hector them.
Of course Obama felt he had to hector us.  He is the first actively anti-Christ occupant of the White House.  Many others were no friend of Christ or Christians:  John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush to name three.  Emperor Zero is not "The" anti-Christ, certainly, but as the apostle John put it,  " have heard that the anti-christ is coming, even now many anti-christs have come."

Obama, like most Progressive Democrats, believe that Christians or as they put it, "the religious right" are a much greater threat to their plans than Islam, partly because Islam, a totalitarian political system, feels so familiar to people who are essentially Communists.  Heck, Emperor Zero was raised by Communists: his own mother, her consort Frank Marshall Davis, as well as Obama's adoptive father.

There was a comment on Roger Simon's article that correctly identifies the cultural stars that Obama navigates by:

...[Obama's] clear identification with all non-western, non-white, non-capitalist, nondemocratic people, cultures and systems. He is a small-minded, testy, twisted little man with an inferiority complex masked by narcissistic acting out and a confused, incoherent ideology. An abandoned child raised by communists, mentored by a pimp, marinated in college dorm radicalism and Alinskian mischief. A profoundly defective mind and character, elected by a weak, lazy, gullible culture not worthy of its heritage.

The best response to Obama I've read to date comes from Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, who delivers the rhetorical ordnance right on target:
“It was nice of the President to give us a history lesson at the Prayer breakfast,” Jindal said. “Today, however, the issue right in front of his nose, in the here and now, is the terrorism of Radical Islam, the assassination of journalists, the beheading and burning alive of captives. We will be happy to keep an eye out for runaway Christians, but it would be nice if he would face the reality of the situation today.
The Medieval Christian threat is under control, Mr. President. Please deal with the Radical Islamic threat today.

Legalization of Marijuana: Does it Work and Why

From that rare journalist that Ol' Backwoods considers a national treasure, Emily Miller:
Watch my heated debate with Kennedy on the total failure of legalizing marijuana in Colorado and related issues on Fox Business. She asked how I can support gun rights but not legal drugs. Watch my answer in video:

Interesting perspective, Emily. Thought it pains me to disagree with so gracious a lady, I must do so on the legalization of marijuana.  I have arrived at this position through much thought on the nature of people in a fallen world.

As with any other intoxicating substance, people who truly want marijuana will get it, regardless of the prohibition.

The history of Prohibition in the US, especially prohibition of liquor and certain guns, not to mention the waste of lives and treasure that is the "War on Drugs", can be referenced to show that the methods used to enforce any prohibition will be used to take other freedoms. The present rampant and unconstitutional takings by government--asset forfeiture-- is a direct result of the War on Drugs. And that is only one example.

Thought it seems counter-intuitive, after the "newness" wears off, we will arrive at the place we are with booze: some people don't drink, others only drink a little and never get drunk (Ol' Backwoods is in this category), and others are addicts, drinking themselves to death.  So it will be with naturally-grown drugs like marijuana.

I have no interest in marijuana, but I do have an interest in not perpetuating what the Founders most feared: a standing army.  And that is exactly what is required to enforce the prohibition of any controlled substance.

What about heroin?  Cocaine?  Synthetic pot (THC)? I don't know about these.  But drawing a parallel with ethanol-based drinks, any American can make pretty much all the beer he or she and their friends can drink, but distilling ethanol into a concentrated form is heavily taxed and strictly proscribed in law.  So, perhaps natural opium, coca, and hemp should not be proscribed by law, but only their concentration into truly dangerous drugs, along with the chemical synthesis of drugs such as methamphetamine.

We sure have to do something better than the present "War on Drugs".  If it weren't for Americans who bear arms, I am convinced that the standing army so produced would have been used to create an utterly totalitarian society by now.

It Is So Tiresome...

  • It is so tiresome to continue to be told that what I believe is "racist", "sexist" or "homophobic", and that "your side will lose" on gay rights, when I only believe what Christians have believed for centuries: that homosexuality is a damnable sin, probably even worse than adultery because of its affront to God's design...
  • It is so tiresome to read "unemployment rate" figures in the papers and on the Internet that the US government puts out, and to see the media tout them as gospel when they are clearly not (and all the while, they despise the real Gospel), while over 92 million people in the US are "not in labor force"...
  • It is so tiresome to be told over and over of "global warming" and "man-caused climate change," indicating the utterly godlike powers of mankind, yet the Euroweenies and socialist metrosexuals that spew such nonsense can't even summon the collective will to prevent the Muslims living among them from chopping their silly heads off...
  • It is so tiresome to be told I am a terrible human being for wanting to "hunt Bambi" by people who eat oh-so-trendy free-range chicken that they did not kill themselves, did not clean themselves, and did not cook themselves.
  • The list goes on.  So tiresome.

"Kill the individual. Kill the soul." (Fountainhead Quote)

This is what we're up against, people.  The following is a conversation from Ayn Rand's novel "The Fountainhead", between Ellsworth Toohey and Peter Keating.   Rand used her memory of the British socialist Harold Laski to fashion Toohey's character.
“What do you want Ellsworth?”
“Power, Petey. I want to rule. Like my spiritual predecessors. But I’m luckier than they were. I inherited the fruit of their efforts and I shall be the one who’ll see the great dream made real. I see it all around me today. I recognise it. I don’t like it. I didn't expect to like it. Enjoyment is not my destiny. I shall find such satisfaction as my capacity permits. I shall rule.”
“You. The world. It’s only a matter of discovering the lever. If you learn how to rule one single man’s soul, you can get the rest of mankind. It’s the soul, Peter, the soul. Not whips or swords or fire or guns. That’s why the Caesars, the Attilas, the Napoleons were fools and did not last. We will. The soul, Peter, is that which can’t be ruled. It must be broken. Drive a wedge in, get your fingers on it – and the man is yours. You won’t need a whip – he’ll bring it to you and ask to be whipped. Set him in reverse – and his own mechanism will do your work for you. Use him against himself. Want to know how it’s done? See if I ever lied to you. See if you haven’t heard all this for years, but didn’t want to hear, and the fault is yours, not mine.
There are many ways. Here’s one. Make man feel small. Make him feel guilty. Kill his aspiration and his integrity. That’s difficult. The worst among you gropes for an idol in his own twisted way. Kill integrity by internal corruption. Use it against himself. Direct it towards a goal destructive of all integrity. Preach selflessness. Tell man that altruism is the ideal. Not a single one has ever reached it and not a single one ever will. His every living instinct screams against it. But don’t you see what you accomplish ? Man realises [sic] that he’s incapable of what he’s accepted as the noblest virtue – and it gives him a sense of guilt, of sin, of his own basic unworthiness. Since the supreme ideal is beyond his grasp, he gives up eventually all ideals, all aspiration, all sense of his personal value. He feels himself obliged to preach what he can’t practice. But one can’t be good halfway or honest approximately. To preserve one’s integrity is a hard battle. Why preserve that which one knows to be corrupt already? His soul gives up its self respect. You've got him. He’ll obey. He’ll be glad to obey – because he can’t trust himself, he feels uncertain, he feels unclean. That’s one way.
Here’s another. Kill man’s sense of values. Kill his capacity to recognise [sic] greatness or to achieve it. Great men can’t be ruled. We don’t want any great men. Don’t deny conception of greatness. Destroy it from within. The great is the rare, the difficult, the exceptional. Set up standards of achievement open to all, to the least, to the most inept – and you stop the impetus to effort in men, great or small. You stop all incentive to improvement, to excellence, to perfection. Laugh at Roark and hold Peter Keating as a great architect. You've destroyed architecture. Build Lois Cook and you've destroyed literature. Hail Ike and you've destroyed the theatre. Glorify Lancelot Clankey and you've destroyed the press. Don’t set out to raze all shrines – you’ll frighten men, Enshrine mediocrity – and the shrines are razed.
Then there’s another way. Kill by laughter. Laughter is an instrument of human joy. Learn to use it as a weapon of destruction. Turn it into a sneer. It’s simple. Tell them to laugh at everything. Tell them that a sense of humour [sic] is an unlimited virtue. Don’t let anything remain sacred in a man’s soul – and his soul won’t be sacred to him. Kill reverence and you’ve killed the hero in man. One doesn't reverence with a giggle. He’ll obey and he’ll set no limits to obedience – anything goes – nothing is too serious.
Here’s another way. This is most important. Don’t allow men to be happy. Happiness is self-contained and self-sufficient. Happy men have no time and no use for you. Happy men are free men. So kill their joy in living. Take away from them what they want. Make them think that the mere thought of a personal desire is evil. Bring them to a state where saying ‘I want’ is no longer a natural right, but a shameful admission. Altruism is of great help in this. Unhappy men will come to you. They’ll need you. They’ll come for consolation, for support, for escape. Nature allows no vacuum. Empty man’s soul – and the space is yours to fill.
I don’t see why you should look so shocked, Peter. This is the oldest one of all. Look back at history. Look at any great system of ethics, from the Orient up. Didn't they all preach the sacrifice of personal joy ? Under all the complications of verbiage, haven’t they all had a single leitmotif: sacrifice, renunciation, self-denial ? Haven’t you been able to catch their theme song – ‘Give up, give up, give up, give up’ ? Look at the moral atmosphere of today. Everything enjoyable, from cigarettes to sex to ambition to the profit motive, is considered depraved or sinful. Just prove that a thing makes men happy and you've damned it. That’s how far weave come. We've tied happiness to guilt. And we've got mankind by the throat.
Throw your first born into a sacrificial furnace – lie on a bed of nails – go into the desert to mortify the flesh – don’t dance – don’t go to the movies on Sunday – don’t try to get rich – don’t smoke – don’t drink. It’s all the same line. The great line. Fools don’t think that taboos of this nature are just nonsense. Something left over, old-fashioned. But there’s always a purpose in nonsense. Don’t bother to examine a folly – ask yourself only what it accomplishes. Every system of ethics that preached sacrifice grew into a world power and ruled millions of men.
Of course, you must dress them up. You must tell people they’ll achieve a superior kind of happiness by giving up everything that makes them happy. You don’t have to be too clear about it. Use big vague words. ‘Universal Harmony’ – ‘Eternal Spirit’ – ‘Divine Purpose’ – ‘Nirvana’ – ‘Paradise’ – ‘Racial Supremacy’ – ‘the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.’ Internal corruption, Peter. That’s the oldest one of all. The farce has been going on for centuries and men still fall for it.
Yet the test should be so simple: just listen to any prophet and if you hear him speak of sacrifice – run. Run faster than from a plague. It stands to reason that where there’s sacrifice, there’s someone collecting sacrificial offerings. Where there’s service, there’s someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice, speaks of slaves and masters. And intends to be the master. But if you ever hear a man telling you that you must be happy, that it’s your natural right, that your first duty is to yourself – that will be the man who has nothing to gain from you. But let him come and you’ll scream your empty heads off, howling that he’s a selfish monster. So the racket is safe for many, many centuries.
But here you might have noticed something. I said, ‘It stands to reason’. Do you see ? Men have a weapon against you. Reason. So you must be very sure to take it away from them. Cut the props from under it. But be careful. Don’t deny outright. Never deny anything outright, you give your hand away. Don’t say reason is evil – though some have gone that far and with astonishing success. Just say that reason is limited. That there’s something above it. What ? You don’t have to be too clear about it either. The field’s inexhaustible. ‘Instinct’ – ‘Feeling’ – ‘Revelation’ – ‘Divine Intuition’ – ‘Dialectic Materialism’. If you get caught at some crucial point and somebody tells you that your doctrine doesn't make sense – you’re ready for him. You tell him there’s something above sense. That here he must not try to think, he must feel. He must believe. Suspend reason and you play it deuces wild. Anything goes in any manner you wish whenever you need it. You've got him. Can you rule a thinking man ? We don’t want any thinking men.”
Keating had sat down on the floor, by the side of the dresser. He did not want to abandon the dresser; he felt safer, leaning against it.
“Peter, you've heard all this. You've seen me practising [sic] it for ten years. You see it being practised [sic] all over the world. Why are you disgusted ? You have no right to sit there and stare at me with the virtuous superiority of being shocked. You’re in on it. You've taken your share and you've got to go along. You’re afraid to see where it’s leading. I’m not. I’ll tell you.
The world of the future. The world I want. A world of obedience and of unity. A world where the thought of each man will not be his own, but an attempt to guess the thought of the next neighbour [sic] who’ll have no thought – and so on, Peter, around the globe. Since all must agree with all. A world where no man will hold a desire for himself, but will direct all his efforts to satisfy the desires of his neighbour [sic] who’ll have no desires except to satisfy the desires of the next neighbour [sic], who’ll have no desires – around the globe, Peter. Since all must serve all. A world in which man will not work for so innocent an incentive as money, but for that headless monster – prestige. The approval of his fellows – their good opinion – the opinion of men who’ll be allowed to hold no opinion. An octopus, all tentacles and no brain.
Judgement, Peter ! Not judgement, but public polls. An average drawn upon zeroes – since no individuality will be permitted. A world with its motor cut off and a single heart, pumped by hand. My hand – and the hands of a few, a very few other men like me. Those who know what makes you tick – you great, wonderful average, you who have not risen in fury when we called you the average, the little, the common, you who've liked and accepted these names. You’ll sit enthroned and enshrined, you, the little people, the absolute ruler to make all past rulers squirm with envy, the absolute, the unlimited, God and Prophet and King combined. Vox populi. The average, the common, the general.
Do you know the proper antonym for Ego ? Bromide, Peter. The rule of the bromide. But even the trite has to be organised by someone at some time. We’ll do the organising [sic]. Vox dei. We’ll enjoy unlimited submission – from men who've learned nothing except to submit. We’ll call it ‘to serve’. We’ll give out medals for service. You’ll fall over one another in a scramble to see who can submit better and more. There will be no other distinction to seek. No other form of personal achievement.
Can you see Howard Roark in this picture ? No ? Then don’t waste time on foolish questions. Everything that can’t be ruled, must go. And if freaks persist in being born occasionally, they will not survive beyond their twelfth year. When their brain begins to function, it will feel the pressure and it will explode. The pressure gauged to a vacuum. Do you know the fate of deep-sea creatures brought out to sunlight? So much for future Roarks. The rest of you will smile and obey. Have you noticed that the imbecile always smiles ? Man’s first frown is the first touch of God on his forehead. The touch of thought. But we’ll have neither God nor thought. Only voting by smiles. Automatic levers – all saying yes…
Now if you were a little more intelligent, you’d ask: What of us, the rulers ? What of me, Ellsworth Monkton Toohey ? And I’d say, Yes, you’re right. I’ll achieve no more than you will. I’ll have no purpose save to keep you contended. To lie, to flatter you, to praise you, to inflate your vanity. To make speeches about the people and the common good. Peter, my poor old friend, I’m the most selfless man you've ever known. I have less independence than you, whom I just forced to sell your soul. You've used people at least for the sake of what you could get from them for yourself. I want nothing for myself. I use people for the sake of what I can do to them. It’s my only function and satisfaction. I have no private purpose. I want power. I want my world of the future. Let all live for all. Let all sacrifice and none profit. Let all suffer and none enjoy. Let progress stop. Let all stagnate. There’s equality in stagnation. All subjugated to the will of all. Universal slavery – without even the dignity of a master. Slavery to slavery. A great circle – and a total equality. The world of the future.”
“Ellsworth… you’re…”
“Insane ? Afraid to say it ? There you sit and the world’s written all over you, your last hope. Insane ? Look around you. Pick up any newspaper and read the headlines. Isn't it coming ? Isn't it here ? Every single thing I told you ? Isn't Europe swallowed already and we’re stumbling on to follow ? Everything I said is contained in a single word – collectivism. And isn't that the god of our century. To act together. To think – together. To feel – together. To unite, to agree, to obey. To obey, to serve, to sacrifice. Divide and conquer – first. But then, unite and rule. We've discovered that one last. Remember the Roman Emperor who said he wished humanity had a single neck so he could cut it ? People have laughed at him for centuries. But we’ll have the last laugh. We've accomplished what he couldn't accomplish. We've taught men to unite. This makes one neck ready for one leash. We found the magic word. Collectivism.
Look at Europe, you fool. Can’t you see past the guff and recognise [sic] the essence ? One country is dedicated to the proposition that man has no rights, that the collective is all. The individual held as evil, the mass – as God. No motive and no virtue permitted – except that of service to the proletariat.
That’s one version. Here’s another. A country dedicated to the proposition that man has no rights, that the State is all. The individual held as evil, the race – as God. No motive and no virtue permitted – except that of service to the race. Am I raving or is this the harsh reality of two continents already ? If you’re sick of one version, we push you in the other. We've fixed the coin. Heads – collectivism. Tails – collectivism. Give up your soul to a council – or give it up to a leader. But give it up, give it up, give it up. Offer poison as food and poison as antidote. Go fancy on the trimmings, but hang on to the main objective. Give the fools a chance, let them have their fun – but don’t forget the only purpose you have to accomplish.
Kill the individual. Kill man’s soul. The rest will follow automatically.”

Backwoods Ham Radio Net: Kook Broadcasters & Submarine Comms

Yesterday, we only had 9 die-hard ham radio operators on Ol' Backwoods' ham radio net on Superbowl Sunday, but we had a great discussion on our ragchew/roundtable segment, which extended even after the net was declared officially over.

Old Fred was discussing details of a filter he was helping another ham build to reject interference to the WWVB 60 kHz time signal.  That's the signal that synchronizes the so-called "atomic" clocks that you can buy.

Fred was also discussing an old 14 kHz Navy RTTY system, which actually had separate transmitters and antennas for mark and space frequencies!  The antenna, which he thought was a quarter-wave of some 3.3 miles in length, was stretched between two mountains, in Colorado, if he recalled correctly.

Of course, VLF stations are still on the air, because their low frequency allows the signals to penetrate deep into the oceans to send data to submarines. Here's some history of Navy VLF. We live in a fortunate era, because these days all it takes to create a receiver for VLF is to connect a long wire antenna (long as you can make it!) to an adjustable L-C resonator you can make yourself, then connect that to the microphone input of a spare sound card on your computer.  Here's a YouTube video recording of a Russian submarine signal.

We also discussed a pirate religious broadcaster who has been transmitting in the 40-meter phone band, and on aeronautical HF frequencies:
The FCC has ordered an unlicensed California religious broadcaster, who sometimes broadcast on a frequency in the 40 meter phone band, to shut down his station. The FCC’s Los Angeles District Office on December 31 issued a Notice of Unlicensed Operation to Martin K. Elliott of Inyokern, California. ... The FCC said its agents used radio direction-finding techniques to confirm that signals on 6280 kHz and 11,595 kHz were emanating from [his] residence ...
“The Commission’s records show that no license was issued for operation of a station on either the frequencies of 6280 kHz or 11595 kHz at this location,” the FCC wrote. “Unlicensed operation of this radio station must be discontinued immediately.”
Ol' Backwoods did a quick check of the QRZ database for amateurs living in  Inyokern, CA, and Elliot is not a licensed amateur radio operator.

From the Religion News Blog, we learn about this kook Elliot:
Broadcasting under the name ‘YHWH,’ Elliott stated that he preached “Old Testament doctrine without any of the erroneous, destructive and confusing traditions of men.”
Referring to himself as a “spiritual Jew,” in one broadcast available on YouTube he explained, “My goal is to magnify and amplify the divine name of YHWH, creator of heaven and earth.”
Yeah, OK, but you ain't magnifying anything but your fines and jail time for unlicensed broadcasting.  The article continues:
Elliott says that he had been a Christian for 40 years before YHWH ‘revealed the truth’ to him. He notes that he can document that “tens of millions of Christians have been fooled by the dark side into believing in the so-called god Jesus.”
In addition to being a blasphemous crackpot who's causing illegal interference to lawful communication, Elliot isn't much good with numbers, either; he's off by a couple of billion.

The Commission gave him 10 days to respond. The FCC said its Notice “does not preclude this office from pursuing additional sanctions based upon our investigation of this incident.”

We discussed where Elliot might have gotten the equipment for his illegal broadcasts, and conjectured that he either had a) modified amateur radio equipment, or b) a signal generator connected to a power amp, or c) gotten some commercial AM broadcasting equipment off eBay, or something.  Who knows?

Ol' Steve, another one of our participants on our Net tonight, talked about the old days when there were pirate broadcasters on the AM broadcast bands.  He and I discussed having built low-power (legal) AM transmitters for that band when we were kids.
