The Last Post?

Yeah, maybe for awhile.

Like many of my compatriots, I have come to understand that there is no political or social solution for the problems that face our nation.  We are caught in a hurricane-force gale of lies and tyranny, and being sucked into a maelstrom of slow-motion economic collapse, while normalcy bias whispers from every quarter, "Peace, all is well!"

But it is not well.

There is nothing any one person or even medium-sized groups can do to stop it now.  Events are in motion.  The fascists have the money and the power.   Regardless of whether they originated from the elites like Soros and Obama or the EBT-swiping gang-bangers in Ferguson or Atlanta, these actions have natural consequences that can not be escaped from.  We have passed all the exits.

People are going to die.

America has asked for this.  This country deserves every stroke of God's wrath for its many sins, too numerous to list here, but enough to make Sodom and Gomorrah blush.  Even the original Sodomites didn't sell dismembered children, and crunch their fancy zero-nutrition salads while boasting about their butchery.

All I and my family can do now is try to weather the storm the best we can.

The time for preparedness is over; the crisis is come.  Even if there was time left to prepare, I'd almost have to start over.  My personal preparations have been almost all drained by a series of unfortunate events, including a home in another state I cannot sell now, nor perhaps ever.  Making wiser decisions in times past may have had me in a better position, but the government takes more than 40% of anything I earn anyway, so thinking wiser decisions back then would have saved us is probably an illusion, too.

I seem to have a lot of them.  Illusions, I mean.  They are going to be painful to be disabused of.

Farewell and Godspeed.  I hope your family makes it through.   You may hear from me again, or you may not.

I pray to God for all who call upon His Name.

The Progressives' Last Stand on Gun Control: Insurance

As an indication of how desperate the Progressives have become after each and every since one of their Federal gun control initiatives under Emperor Zero have been stomped into the ground by decent people, they are now trying to consolidate the gains of ObamaCare and browbeat FedGov into forcing peaceable, law-abiding gun owners to pay for mandatory "gun violence" insurance .  Not making the criminals, pay, oh, no, the peaceable gun owner who never initiates violence on others must pay.  It's revenge, and bonus points for injustice!

But the Progs are still holding on to their fascist dreams, and won't die (rhetorically, at least) that easily.  A Progressive commenter at the site above, no doubt a stringy-haired, beta-male or bull-female collectivist still living in its mommy's basement, gurgles one last time and spews forth the following bile (in collectivist RED).  I promise you, dear reader, this is an exact quote.  Apparently, in publik screwel, the Progdroid did not learn spelling or grammar.
1. all guns manufactured or imported into the US must bear a unique number, like a VIN.   [BWE: Hah!  Prog does not not know enough about firearms to know this is already the case!  I bet it has never even touched a gun, and probably doesn't even know how to drive a car!  And it's wetting his hoo-ha just to know I can mill an AR-15 lower in my garage. "Ghost guns!  Ghost guns!"]
2. require all gun buyers to show proof of insurance, both liability and uninsured, at time of purchase. [BWE: And how will you do this if I buy a gun from my buddy?  Ah, I see you get to that in #6, as you Progs always do.]
3. add a mandatory tax or duty on all guns, paid into a public liability fund. [BWE: Hey Sweet Pea, you might want to look up the Pittman-Robertson Excise Tax.  It's been around awhile. And worse for the Progs, it benefits hunting and wildlife conservation!  Oh, the humanity!]
4. place caps on the liability of any lawful gun owner and their insurance, and allow unlimited claims against CGL or home owner policies for uninsured gun owners, to encourage carriers to issue gun policies.   [I see these fascists have learned from their experiences suing companies under "environmental" laws.  However, I think this one is unconstitutional on its face, under the Takings clause.]
5. make special exceptions for historic guns, and a phase-in period for existing guns to get their VIN (GIN?) and insurance.   [BWE: Of course, they want to subarm us, as Alan Korwin sagely terms it!]
6. create a single, federal database for all guns in the US. call it "the militia record system" b/c after all, the 2d amendment right is keyed to the "militia" (it would also be constitutional under the commerce clause, but i digress).  [At last!  The  Prog reveals his true collectivist agenda: registration, confiscation, and elimination.  Stalin would be proud.  And notice, for bonus points, it continues to kick against the goads of Heller and McDonald.]
Here was my response to the little fascist (revised and extended from my actual comment on the site, because, hey, this here is my blog and I can do that):
What power do you people think you have to enforce such a thing? Surely the beta males and bull chicks in the Progressive ranks aren't going to use guns to force us to do these things; heck, we're the ones with the guns, remember?
So, I assume you think the police and military will do it? There you are sadly mistaken, Sweet Pea. A local cop THANKED me for carrying a pistol the other day. He and I, it turns out, shop at the same gun shop, and shoot with some of the same people. You see, he is on OUR side, not the Progressives'.  And the military?  The Oathkeepers have got my back, and I sure have got theirs.
Come on, how will you get this done?
Bring in French-speaking UN Blue Helmets? Them helmets sure make mighty fine target designators at long, long ranges. Foreign troops? Where do you think they'll be barracked (3rd Amendment), and how long will they last there before (aww!) something they ate in the chow hall gives them terrible diarrhea?  Or worse?
You Progressives do not have a plan. You are only fantasizing, and projecting your own weakness.
Last gasp of the American gun-grabber, folks.

UPDATE:  Mike Vanderboegh had to deliver a similar smackdown to another gun-grabbing fantasizer, but he does it far better than Ol' Backwoods can manage to do:

Subject: Starting a bloody civil war seems an odd way to "prevent gun violence."
Since you don't seem to live in any real world I recognize, can you perhaps suggest what I should be smoking to duplicate your hallucinatory results, should I wish to leave this reality for your dopey Wonderland?
I guess you haven't been paying attention to what has been happening since the various state laws have been passed since Sandy Hook. All of them, I repeat ALL of them, have been nullified by "I Will Not Comply" armed civil disobedience.
In CT they have an 85% non-compliance rate. In New York it is estimated to be 90%, with county sheriffs in upstate threatening to arrest any state cops who come into their jurisdiction seeking to enforce the wildly misnamed SAFE Act.
In CO, I have led smuggling efforts and public demonstrations flouting their law.
Same goes for WA state and OR, where we have had armed marches on the capitol steps, breaking Bloomberg's laws and daring them to do anything about it. We even held a "background-check-free" arms expo/gun show in violation of the law in WA, daring the authorities to do anything about it.
They did nothing.
The politicians in each of these states have not sent one raid party to enforce their unconstitutional diktats. Indeed, they seem, after almost three years of such armed resistance, not to know whether to defecate or go blind.
So who, you stupid, silly little collectivist cypher, are you going to get to enforce your "benevolent" tyranny? Planning on coming yourself? No. I didn't think so.
But until you do, until you decide to have the courage of your so-called convictions and send men with state sanctioned violence to our doors, then kindly shut up. You're boring the rest of us with your impotent prattle. But, by all means, if it makes you feel better, go back and take another toke of whatever it is you're smoking.
Mike Vanderboegh
In a sane world, that would leave a mark.

On Self-Defense Rights, We're Winning & Should ACT LIKE IT

Kurt Schlichter has a great article at Townhall today, reminding us of the fact the gun control has failed in most of America.  I'll expand on some of Kurt's points.

At this point in the game, we can afford to wait out Obama and the Democrats on gun control.  We know that merely with a bit of lobbying and public outcry, we can delay or kill any federal gun control bill.  At the state level, armed citizens in Connecticut, New York, Washington, and Oregon are showing the way: DISOBEY.  With disobedience rates estimated to top 90%, any law is effectively nullified.

I'd like to see gun owners start dealing from a position of strength, and start pushing our way forward to more freedom.  When Progressives lose big in November 2016, we should get our list together.

The top of our list should be the repeal of ALL "sporting use" language from the US Code, particularly in Title 18 Section 922.  This Nazi language that Senator Dodd and his cronies put in there is completely at odds with the clear text of the 2nd Amendment, and it's certainly at odds with the Supreme Court's Heller and McDonald rulings, which clearly state, correctly, that the Constitution protects the right to own arms for self-defense.  As I've said before, the 2nd doesn't protect the right to sporting goods.

Secondly, with instant federal NICS background checks in place, the proscription against buying a handgun in another state and taking possession there is STUPID, and should be repealed.  If I'm shopping in Georgia, and I see a sweet Glock 34 with that MOS slide on it, why shouldn't I be able to buy it right then and there and take it home?  No, Mr. Backwoods, you can't, because you live across the river in Alabama.  What a crock.  Is this America, or the Soviet Union?  (Don't answer that, Progressives.)

Thirdly, the 1986 ban on registration of new machine guns for "civilian" use (which isn't even constitutional language, see definition of "militia") should die an ignominious death.  (And maybe that's already happening.)  The birthright of every American is to own the same small arms our military has.  The NFA collectors might not like that repeal, though; at the stroke of the pen (by Cruz?), the prices of machine guns on the open market will probably fall by a factor of ten.

And while we're at it, remove suppressors from the NFA list, and stop taxing their transfers.  Why should gun mufflers, which are nothing but hearing protection, be registered by the Feds?  I wonder how many billions have been spent on hearing aids because of this STUPID law.  Suppressors are one of the fastest-growing segment of the firearm industry, and certainly the fastest-growing of the Federally-taxed firearms and components known collectively as NFA items, after the unconstitutional and disastrous National Firearms Act of 1934.

Finally, in the states, we must push for repeal of all gun- and gun-owner registration laws (so-called "background check" laws), and all laws restricting the ownership of certain kinds of guns.

We're winning; we should act like it.

FORWARD to freedom!

"When You Chum For Monsters," You Get Monsters

Two weeks ago, Louis Farrakhan called for black men to rise up and murder whites.

Today, a black man answered the call, and he was 100% motivated by racial hatred:
A former TV news reporter fatally shot two ex-colleagues this morning during a live broadcast in Roanoke Virginia.  Then he posted his own recorded videos of the killings on social media.  It is reported he faxed a 23 page manifesto to ABC News, claiming his intent was racially motivated – inspired by Black Lives Matter propaganda.
This is a monster.  Only monsters murder innocent people in cold blood.   But as Michael Bane said today, "When we chum for monsters, why are we surprised when they rise to the bait?"  This monster-- I will not quote his name-- is exactly the kind of person who rises to the bait of the [Only] "Black Lives Matter" propaganda, to the bait of Barack Hussein Obama and Eric Holder and their open hatred of white people and white culture, to the bait of Louis Farrakhan and his previously-mentioned trolling for murderers.  These "Progressives", the Prozis as David Codrea calls them, have reaped exactly what they have sown: murder.

And of course, the media is cranking on this 24/7, which only encourages the monsters' desire for fame.  This particular monster compared himself to Klebold and Chu, two previous monsters, in his 23-page screed.

Oh, and y'all better believe there's gonna be a big, Sandy-Hook level blood dance to gin up political support to take our guns away over this.  It's already starting-- straight outta the White House.    Note that they are not concerned in the least with the facts:  violent crime has been spiraling down for 40 years, even as the nation has armed itself, with millions of Americans getting their concealed carry licenses or voting for state legislatures that pass Constitutional carry laws.  More guns, less crime, indeed, John Lott.

But, they're cranking up the gun control already.  From the noble successor watchmen to the JPFO, the Zelman Partisans:
Before the bodies of 24-year-old reporter Alison Parker and 27-year-old cameraman Adam Ward were even cold, Virginia’s opportunistic swine of a governor Fast Terry McAuliffe started immediately calling for more gun control.
“There are too many guns in the hands of people that shouldn’t have guns,” McAuliffe said during an interview with WTOP. “There is too much gun violence in America,” he said, adding that he has long advocated for strengthening gun background checks and that it should be made a priority.
Come and try to take mine, Punk McAuliffe.  You want a war?  Try to take arms from decent people.  Instead, why don't you Prozis try prosecuting people like Farrakhan, who are inciting riots, theft, and murder?

And How Did that "Weapon-Free Zone" Work For Ya?

Another day, another attack in a "gun-free zone":
h/t: Breitbart News
Breitbart News previously reported the August 5 hatchet and firearm attack inside a movie theater in the Nashville [TN] suburb of Antioch
The Tennessean reports that the precise theater was Carmike Hickory 8 Cinema.
We can now report that Carmike Cinemas has been boycotted over their gun free policies in the past. Moreover, those same policies were praised by Newtown Action Alliance; a gun control group which formed a week after the heinous December 2012 attack on Sandy Hook Elementary.
According to Second Amendment Check, a Carmike representative responded to an email about the cinema chain’s gun policies by writing:
Thank you for your inquiry concerning Carmike’s policy on the possession of firearms within our theatres. The events in Aurora, Colorado have placed a renewed emphasis on safety and emergency protocols at all of our theatre locations. Like many movie exhibitors and other retail businesses, Carmike does not allow weapons of any kind, including firearms, into our theatres, except for weapons carried by law enforcement and other security personnel. This policy was in effect prior the recent events in Colorado and remains our policy going forward.
Note the prohibition against “firearms” and “weapons of any kind.” Yet according to The Tennessean, the Carmike Hickory 8 attacker had pepper spray, a hatchet, and a gun. On the other hand, law-abiding citizens who adhered to the corporate ban on guns were defenseless.
As we saw at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana, persons with ill intent are not hindered by gun and weapon-free zones. Instead, such zones make their attacks easier.

The last 9 mass shootings have been ALL ''GUN-FREE ZONES!''  At least 159 people killed and over 150 people injured.  And for what?  So the God-hating Progs can feel good about themselves, while they die waiting for the police?

Not me.  I either won't go, or I will ignore the sign.

This is stupid.

The Answer Is: "NO!" A Thousand Times: "NO!"

It's building.  Mike Vanderboegh, David Codrea, Kit Lange, and a lot of other people in the gun-rights movement have voiced the
"We Will Not Comply!" view lately.    This week, this piece came out and it resonated with me so much.  Lately, I've been in a different mindset, too, as regards morons like these who are still looking to take our property and freedom, as regards firearms.

I have an answer for the author and those who want more gun laws enacted to restrict, register, and eventually confiscate firearms in this country: NO.

NO, we will not comply.    Just like the good people of New York, Connecticut, California, Colorado, Washington, and now Oregon and even Alabama told their respective state governments to stuff it, so will we say to the Federal government: NO.

You Progs and your enablers cannot pass a "gun control" law than can't be nullified by our disobedience.    And guess what: the criminals won't obey them, either.

But unlike the criminal scum, we are peaceable, and harm none unless deadly force is used on us or our own.  At which point, we will fight back with deadly force, as is our right.

These "gun control" laws-- every single one!-- are unconstitutional, and further, infringe the natural right of all humans to defend themselves. Even if you Progs manage to remove the 2nd Amendment from the Constitution, all you've done is fool yourselves and the Feds into thinking y'all can infringe a right that pre-existed the Constitution, and will exist after the Constitution is a distant memory.

We vote NO!  We vote NO with every Glock, AR-15, Smith & Wesson, H&K, Springfield, Mossberg, milsurp and every other servicable firearm that "We the People" own.   And we've been buying a LOT since your perfumed prince was elected.  We vote NO with every box, case, and truckload of ammunition we are buying and cranking out of our home reloading equipment.  We vote NO with every hour we spend on the range or in training, honing our shooting and tactical skills, or learning how to deal with laws, police and courts if we should have to use our skills in defense of our lives.

We vote NO.

We don't need government agents to protect us; we will take care of our own.  Leave us alone, stop trying to take our property and freedom away, or you will suffer the consequences.

UPDATE:  They're still trying to take our property and freedom by government force.
As David Codrea said to this simpering collectivist tool, NO.    What will you do now, you collectivist tool?  Go full stompy-feet?

Aaron Zelman, "Gran'pa Jack", Comic-Book Freedom Fighter

Ol' Backwoods has been a member of the Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership for years, even though I'm a Gentile.  I had great respect for the late Aaron Zelman, founder of that noble and uncompromising organization.  (JPFO is gone now, swallowed by the squishy Mr. Gottlieb's 2nd Amendment Foundation.  But The Zelman Partisans carry on Zelman's legacy of uncompromising defense of freedom in fine fashion.  Rock on, TZP.)

Mr. Zelman did something back in the 1990's that might have been ill-advised, had he been the kind of man to ask a "media consultant".  But, he wasn't.  Mr. Zelman, along with Richard Stevens, wrote a series of comic books, with a thinly-disguised Zelman as "Gran'pa Jack", the stalwart WWII veteran who sets 'em all straight when they start blabbing about gun control.  "Gran'pa Jack" is joined by a buddy from back in the war, "Leon... the old war-horse," who is black.  Yep, black.  And let me tell you: Leon lets 'em have it, too.

Far from being bubblegum-stickied kids' stuff, this is a serious defense of the right to keep and bear arms, and indeed, all human rights, against overweening, busybody governments everywhere, from the UN, to the US of A federal government, to the uppity, anti-gun city council.  Zelman takes on all comers with a footnoted, well-illustrated, strong defense that keeps it fun (well, for our side), and is packed with zingers.

Digging through some old stuff from our last move, my wife found my copies of 4 classic Zelman comic books: No.1 - "Gun Control Kills Kids", No.4 - "Gun Control is Racist!",  No.5 - "Gran'pa Jack Exposes How the United Nations is Killing Your Freedoms!", and No. 6 -"Will 'Gun Control' Make You Safe?".  I thanked her for saving them, and not throwing them away.  (My dear wife is a strong defender of our rights herself, and a pistol-packin' mama.)

Below are some scans from No.1 and No.5.  In this day and age, these are some serious samizdat, and I think I will save them, in the hopes I have grandchildren.  I'm sure gun control will come back to haunt us again, even if we'll have to fight a civil war over it in the intervening years.

As you look at the images below, think about how fresh, how "up to now" these sound, and they are between 16 and 19 years old.  The Progs' plans never change.

Atheist: Religious Beliefs "Not Sound Basis for Law"

From my "Why God destroyed America" files, comes the following letter to the editor of the Montgomery (AL) Advertiser, this month:

Therefore, I conclude Sheldon E. Jeames must want prohibitions of the  following removed from our laws:
  • Murder .  I mean, hey, the Bible was written by humans, right?  So, what's wrong with a little murder?  Why, one man's murder is another man's playtime, eh, Sheldon?  Murder.  It's such a strong word.  Killing plants and puppies is murder.  Human beings?  Planned Parenthood kills thousands a year, so what's the big deal about killing someone?  Especially if they got something the Gibsmedats want.  And speaking of that...
  • Rape.  What's rape anyway?  It's just a little sex play, right, Sheldon?   And what's wrong with sex?  I mean, nobody but those stupid Christians and Jews think it's wrong to take someone else's wife or daughter, whenever you're feeling in the mood, and perform a little biological function in their junction.  It's just the dance of the chromosomes, right, Sheldon?  Just a chemical reaction.
  • Theft.  That pesky little 8th Commandment!  Why, it comes from the Jews' Sky God or their Flying Spaghetti Monster or something.  What would be wrong with me going over to Sheldon's and picking up that brand new car?  Why, I'm a minority, and I deserve it more than he does.  White privilege, right, Sheldor?  As Van Jones said, "Give them the wealth!  Give them the dignity!"  I need the bling!  Just hand over the keys.  No?  Well, we're going to have a little 6th Commandment violation on the side, OK?
Once people like this deny the most obvious laws of nature and of Nature's God, they ANYTHING GOES.  And America will DESERVE every last thing that happens to her.

Scenario: The Fill-'er-up Attack

View of the IDPA stage discussed.
Have you ever been gassing up your car in a not-so-nice part of town, and wondered: what if a bunch of thugs came up behind and attacked me?

Could I defend myself and my spouse, or myself and my kids?

Saturday, at the Ol' Backwoods Gun Club's monthly IDPA match, we simulated this very situation.

I had to stand on the driver's side next to the gas cap, and pretend I was putting gas in.

At the beep, I drew my pistol, shot two (simulated) bad guys (right rear) while backing up toward the driver's side door. Then, I rotated left, took a knee on the driver's seat, shot 2 bad guys on the left side through the side door (while missing the no-shoot).  Next, I shot through the rear window (glass had been removed for safety), between the front seats, at two bad guys, while being aware of the (simulated) child in the back seat.

I did not hit the child.

I got all the bad guys except one, and I think if it had been a real situation, I think I would have got him.

It was a real heart-pounding stage, especially with the van in the scenario, which made it feel almost real.

It's been giving me a lot of pause since to think about how I carry concealed, why I carry, and what I would do in certain situations.  I've filled up my vehicle 3 times since shooting the scenario, and each time, I've imagined the scenario played out at the particular gas station where I happened to be.

Perhaps that's part of what precipitated the post earlier today.

Whither Self-Defense?

WeaponsMan asks what went wrong with a particular defensive gun use (DGU).  (Hat tip: WRSA)  He summarizes, "In our opinion, it’s often a mistake to display a firearm in hopes of de-escalating a situation."  Yeah.

So, would you pull your pistol in warning, like that guy Pannaman did?  I sure wouldn't.  In fact, I would seriously consider whether to use lethal force in self-defense at all.

This doesn't mean Ol' Backwoods don't carry a piece or two; let me explain.

In post-Trayvon America, self-defense is the only real crime (besides disrespecting the tyrants). The Powers That Be will make sure you that YOU AND I who defend ourselves with deadly force will pay for it, in money, possible jail time, and ruination of our lives and good name, and probably our families’.  The God-hating, lawless thugs that attacked us will not pay for it; they will go free, and be coddled, fed, and taken care of by for the rest of their lives.

Drawing a gun in self-defense? Most of the time, the answer is “it is not worth it”.

I definitely would not defend someone not in my family or immediate circle of friends.  (And I SURE wouldn't defend sea turtles with a gun like Pannaman did!) Sorry, I know that doesn't sound too Christian, but I have to think of my family first.    Are the third-party individuals going to come up with the $100,000 – $1,000,000 to defend me in court? Are they going to replace my weapon that the police most assuredly will take, and allow to rust and ruin in a musty evidence room, or will be “lost” (pocketed by a cop), never to be seen again? Are they going to protect me when the media makes me into the latest George Zimmerman, to be stalked, shot at, and attacked at every turn, while the media gleefully reports each attack, as if I deserved it? When every cop that pulls me over and realizes who I am wants to just shoot me in the face and get it over with?

The answer is no.

Trainers like Massad Ayoob and Andrew Branca make every effort to convince their readers and students that YOU WILL LOSE should you defend your life with deadly force. Even if you are released by the police without charge, even if you are no-billed by the grand jury, even if you are declared innocent of any charge, YOU WILL STILL LOSE, because the civil suits will come from the defenders of the lawless thugs who attacked you. And even if your state precludes civil suits in cases of self-defense (like mine does), it doesn’t matter– the thug defenders, Progressives, and their media allies will mark you down in their little black book, and they will get you, sooner or later, one way or another. If they have to send a chick to accuse you of rape, if they have to off you in a dark alley, if they have to use the media to ruin your good name; they WILL get to you.

Here's the underlying reason for all this: the Powers That Be need to stop self-defense, because self-defense (per Heller and McDonald) is the raison d’etre for "allowing" (the tyrants' view of rights) the proletariat to carry a gun, and even gun ownership itself, and they cannot allow the subject populations to be armed.

Yes, Ol' Backwoods still carries.  I guess I just never learn.  I carry because there might be a direct threat to my or my family’s life that I have no way out of except to kill the attacker.

But I will seek every way out before I even draw my weapon.  I will run away if I can, like the coward my noble ancestors would consider me to be.  I will even allow myself to be shot or wounded before drawing and returning fire. I might be killed by the attacking thug, but if I am, at least my family will have my life insurance. If I live, the media and the powers that be will destroy not only me, but my family as well.

And I haven't even gotten into the psychological impact of killing another human being.

When The Law is Criminal

Just read this post from the brilliant Francis Porretto.

Awesome quotable quote from the article:
I asked one of the members of Parliament whether a majority of the House could legitimize murder. He said no. I asked him whether it could sanctify robbery. He thought not. But I could not make him see that if murder and robbery are intrinsically wrong, and not to be made right by the decisions of statesmen, then similarly all actions must be either right or wrong, apart from the authority of the law; and that if the right and wrong the law are not in harmony with this intrinsic right and wrong, the law itself is criminal. – Herbert Spencer

"Marriage" is a Word I No Longer Use or Recognize

As of this date, I will never again use the term “marriage”. I will not refer to joining of homosexuals in a legal contract as “marriage”.  I will only use the term, "homosexual legal partnership" to describe such a sinful union.

My wife and I are in a state of holy matrimony, blessed by God. I refuse to recognize homosexual legal union contracts as “holy matrimony”, because there is nothing holy about sodomy. It is condemned in Scripture, which is the guide for my life.

I have no ill will of any kind toward homosexuals. I simply want to be left alone to live my life.

But the homosexual political power mongers and their enablers in the Federal government will not allow me to be left alone.  For decades, they have been browbeating American society to have their sin normalized.  By this accursed ruling today, homosexuals believe that their sodomy has now been deemed equivalent to what God ordained.
It is not. It never will be.
Soon, homosexuals will figure out that millions of us refuse to use the term "marriage".  They will raise the bar, with another Supreme Court ruling in the future to force Americans to confess their sinful state as "holy matrimony".  Those who refuse will be shunned, and I believe, jailed.    It's all up for grabs now.
Millions of us will STILL not comply.
This ruling is not the end.  It is only the beginning of the violent schism coming to America.  Trying to force us will only lead to more backlash.  The forced acceptance of sin, the forced registration and confiscation of guns, and the incarceration and eventual extermination of those who refuse, have all been in the plans of the Left for decades, and will only lead to more and more and more division, discord, and soon, violence.
They won today.

But in eternity is the Supreme Judge of all the world.  And He will have the final ruling of all.
UPDATE 6/27: Ol' Backwoods ain't as smart as Justice Alito, but it is comforting to find him saying very similar things in his dissent to yesterday's anti-God decision:
...I assume that those who cling to old beliefs will be able to whisper their thoughts in the recesses of their homes, but if they repeat those views in public, they will risk being labeled as bigots and treated as such by governments, employers, and schools.
The system of federalism established by our Constitution provides a way for people with different beliefs to live together in a single nation. If the issue of same-sex marriage had been left to the people of the States, it is likely that some States would recognize same-sex marriage and others would not. It is also possible that some States would tie recognition to protection for conscience rights.
The majority today makes that impossible. By imposing its own views on the entire country, the majority facilitates the marginalization of the many Americans who have traditional ideas. Recalling the harsh treatment of gays and lesbians in the past, some may think that turnabout is fair play. But if that sentiment prevails, the Nation will experience bitter and lasting wounds.
Bitter and lasting wounds.

UPDATE 6/27 II:  Chris Wysocki of Wyblog is, I assume, a Catholic.   I am not, but I wholeheartedly agree with what he says at Wyblog.  Readers will recognize that Ol' Backwoods was hitting some of the same themes in my article above as Chris does:
You ain't seen nothin' yet.
Because the rainbow-shirts are coming. And they're coming for us.
I figure the first church burning is only hours away.
Within days it'll be impossible to say the words "homosexual" and "sin" in the same sentence anywhere in America.
So let me say it here:
Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
— Catechism of the Catholic Church
I guarantee that within the remainder of my lifetime making the above statement in public will be grounds for arrest. Because the homofascists will not stop until every last Christian is beaten into compliance.
The State of New York recently ordered a Christian couple to undergo re-education for the crime of opposing same-sex "marriage." Do you really think the Obama Administration will do anythlng less vile nationwide?
Lest you think me an alarmist, I give you an excerpt from the dissent:
"The majority graciously suggests that religious believers may continue to 'advocate' and 'teach' their views of marriage. The First Amendment guarantees, however, the freedom to 'exercise' religion. Ominously, that is not a word the majority uses."
The free exercise of religion is dead. One can no longer engage in commerce and uphold Christian morality. We must choose — penury, or sin.
Our forefathers came to these shores to escape religious persecution.
Today religious persecution has been enshrined as an official policy of the United States government.
May God have mercy on their souls.
Emphasis mine.

Millions of us will not comply. What will you do then, over?

Alternate title: Starting a Civil War Does Not Reduce "Gun Violence".

The HuffPo totalitarians are all up in arms (heh, heh) about "nullification".  What particularly chaps them is that we gun owners are getting away with it.

It seems the Left is doing plenty of "nullification" of their own, and of course, it's all right when they do it. State marijuana legalization, "sanctuary cities", and the state-level infringements of the 2nd Amendment are all dinkum "nullification", because the Left approves of them.

Ol' Backwoods can see what this article is really about: to lay the groundwork to destroy the right to keep and bear arms in America, by repeal, de facto or de jure, of the 2nd Amendment.

However, millions of us WILL NOT COMPLY with the Left's federal gun registration and confiscation schemes, just as freedom-loving citizens in New York and Connecticut have nullified state-level laws with their armed disobedience. They will have to force us, and in doing so, they will start a civil war that will cost hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives.  And if they do, they haven't seen "gun violence" yet.

A Cornell university harpy replied to my position, which I stated somewhat differently at the site.   The harpy snarked,
That's really patriotic of you, to pick and choose the parts of the Constitution you want to follow and to threaten federal employees who seek to enforce it with deadly violence. Seems like terrorism to me.
See, that was bait.  I was supposed to be offended at being called a terrorist, and feel bad that she attacked my patriotism.  But I did not take the bait.   Ol' Backwoods replied to the crone with a very effective out-grouping, which tears like claws into the minds of those who are weak in the amygdala, as almost all Progressives are:
I am not the only one who will not comply, sweetie. We are millions. You are few. I thought y'all liked democracy?
Another Proggie tried to scare me and other pro-self-defense commenters.  Again, no sale.
This question was settled by violence in the civil War.    It looks as though violence is once again needed , those that do not wish to live under the laws and government of the United States should live elsewhere. Those that violate those laws are traitors and criminals and should be imprisoned or executed.  END OF STORY!
Woo!  The Empire Strikes Back, eh?  Well, "the laws and government of the United States" are defined by the Constitution, of which the 2nd Amendment is part.  But this is not really what this chump wants to talk about.  He is simply trying to scare me, by threatening force from the government of which he presumes himself a part (elitist attitude), and he's feeling his power over me.

I parried, and went straight for the amygdala, touching his "powerlessness" nerve:
The $64,000 question is, who will imprison or execute millions of us? At that scale, it ceases to become a police action, and will become a bloody civil war. You want that?
If NY and CT are any indication, the powers-that-be have no stomach to enforce gun registration and confiscation.
We will not comply. What will you do about it? Over.
Some Massachusetts latte-drinker just had to weigh in with the tired old saw about repealing the 2nd:

The Second Amendment is obsolete and subject to gross misinterpretation. Therefore, it must be repealed. Then we wouldn't have any more of these "2nd Amendment Protection Acts."
Treat guns like cars. Require license and registration and the passing of both a "know how to use" test and a written test for the license (as well as a background check). Also require insurance. And since states obviously can't be counted on to do this right, make it a Federal law and set of regulations....
Ol' Backwoods replied:
If the 2nd is so obsolete, why doesn't the Left just issue a diktat to "turn them all in now", and send forth the enforcers? I'll tell you why: they know that will cause blood to flow in the streets.
If NY and CT are any indication, legislators love to pass laws, but governors and police are afraid to enforce them They are AFRAID of gun owners, for good reason. I am told there is a >90% noncompliance rate to the NY "SAFE" gun registration/confiscation act, and about the same in CT.
With such successes, I guess you are ready to try it at the federal level.
Millions of us will not comply. What will you do about it? Over.
I believe the answer is, they will do nothing.  They will wait for their enforcers, who need a lot more "juice" (Karl Rove's words when proposing the repeal of the 2nd) than they have now to do anything.

And even if they do repeal the 2nd Amendment and pass laws requiring the registration and confiscation of every gun, WE STILL GET TO VOTE.  We are armed.  We are staying armed.

What will you do about it? Over.

My First IDPA Match

Ol' Backwoods has carried a pistol for years, and have been shooting guns all my life, but I hadn't shot IDPA until today.  Now, I'm mad at myself for not having done this a long time ago!

If any of y'all are ever in the Montgomery, Alabama area, I encourage y'all to come shoot a match at Central Alabama Gun Cub. These guys are so nice, and so inviting and helpful to new shooters.  We had three guys this morning that had never shot IDPA before, including me.  We all had a blast and want to come back and shoot another one next month.

I am glad that before shooting my first IDPA match, I had shot a GSSF match, which, I am told, is like NRA Bullseye.    Even though there's no drawing, running around, cover, etc., like in IDPA, a lot of the "match management" logistics are very much the same, like safety, and squadding and pasting and scoring.  It was a good introduction to those things.

All the dry fire and live fire practice I've done up to this point definitely helped, too.  While shooting, I was putting a lot of conscious thought into the courses of fire and rules and cover, but I didn't have to worry about "how to run the gun" or draw or do reloads.   Muscle memory and my unconscious mind took care of it, because I'd practiced these things.  I just tried to see my sights and call every shot, like Steve Anderson says.

I had some successes.  One of the stages had a very fast left-to-right motorized target and "no-shoot", moving together, triggered by crossing a doorway.  I was pretty jazzed when I saw that I shot an "alpha" and a down-1 on that fast moving target, and didn't hit the no-shoot, like some of the guys did!

On the other hand, I had trouble on some of the stages; I had never shot from retention before, and I definitely need more weak-hand practice.   As the day wore on, and it was so blazing hot here (heat index > 100F), my shooting suffered.    But like Ben Berry of Triangle Tactical says to do, I shook it off and pressed on; I didn't mentally beat myself up about what I'd done wrong.

In fact, I was so "into it" that I didn't even realize I'd finished all 6 stages.  After my run, I was thinking about what the next stage might be like, but then I heard the the SO say, "OK that's the last shooter, tear down the stage!"   Wait, what?  It's over?  It can't be!

In closing, I just want to say thanks to Luke and Ben at Triangle Tactical for encouraging their listeners to get out to an IDPA or USPSA match.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to "get to work", as Mr. Anderson says at the end of every show, on getting better at shooting IDPA.

Schooling the "I Prefer Police Officers" troll on Concealed Carry in Church

Another day, another massacre in a 'Gun-Free' Zone, and another push to take our freedom to keep and bear arms.   (And probably, another Professor Raoul X psych job.)

Ol' Backwoods had to school a troll on Ted Cruz's Facebook page.  The troll in question, obviously a raw-sensitive-amygdala, avoid-painful-truths-at-all-costs type, snarked thusly when I advocated carrying in church, which Ol' Backwoods always does:
Sorry but I prefer police officers who are trained and carrying arms over citizens.
Besides, no open or concealed carry enthusiast/advocate has ever been able to answer this question. When cops do arrive on the scene where an active shooting is taking place, how will they ever be able to differentiate the good guys (civilians packing) from the bad guys (evil scum or nut crazies)?
They are highly likely to plug everyone with a gun in his/her hand for they don't want to take any chances.
There is a very good reason that cops wear uniforms.
Troll: you are wrong.

I and my competitive-pistol-shooting friends can outshoot many if not most police officers.  We have had many days and weeks of training, including training by those who train the police, such as Masaad Ayoob.  And what's more, we stay proficient with regular practice, including such "gunfighter games" as IDPA and IPSC/USPSA, which top trainers who have actually been in gunfights (see again, Mr. Ayoob) tells us simulate the pressure of a gunfight.  In comparison, most police officers, which you "prefer" to protect you, only qualify with a gun ONCE A YEAR.

You are wrong; we are competent.

Also, the police aren't usually there when the monsters arrive; most psychopaths pick "gun-free zones" for their massacres just for that reason. We citizens bearing arms are on the scene, wherever that is. We are the first responders. The police, most times, only arrive as the bodies are cooling.

As to what to do in the aftermath of a righteous defense shooting: Massad Ayoob and the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network EXPLICITLY train their students on what to do when the police arrive, and how to establish that we are the "good guys" and who the evil monsters are. For less money than you probably spend on coffee a month, you too could receive such top-flight training.  But you won't, because you cannot bring yourself to face painful realities, such as the fact that you, and you alone, are responsible for your and your family's security.

And one more thing: decent people have utter contempt for that tiny minority of loudmouths who would deny us the right and ability to defend ourselves and our families from monsters like this. We concealed carry citizens are here to stay. We will be keeping our guns on us everywhere we can. If you are in our circle of protection, you might benefit someday. If not, well, the police are only minutes away.

Yet Another Backdoor Federal Gun Grab

Really, really getting tired of this crap.

More tomorrow on this, friends.

UPDATE: the always-prescient Miguel from 'Gun-Free Zone' Blog wrote:
Somehow I think NYPD is going to be very sorry about this alliance.
Ol' Backwoods mused in return:

I don't know, Miguel.  I'm beginning to think big-city police are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the US Government, specifically the ATF, FBI, and US Marshall Service.  As evidence, I offer LAPD (Chris Dorner), the Lockdown of Waterdownthe present NYPD fascism, the Ferguson Effect, and the Waco massacre (the 2nd one, of the motorcyclists).

NYPD may regret this alliance in the future, at least those honorable officers (the modern-day equivalents of Jim Cirillo's Stakeout Squad) might regret it.  But the Bloombergs and the big-city police chiefs, and those officers who think "protecting and serving" includes police beating down citizens will love this.  Fed power is an aphrodisiac for those people.

One thing is for sure-- the Empire is striking back against gun ownership and gun owners.

And speaking of that: Looks like the NRA really was involved with a "sporting purpose" / Gun Control Act of 1968 re-write.  If this goes one way, it could be good, but I think Emperor Zero would never sign it, and his sub-tyrants would ignore it.

Armed Civil Disobedience Goes Mainstream

Well, this piece gives the ol' Overton Window a shove to the right.

Or, as Bruce Willis' character in Die Hard put it, "Welcome to the party, pal!"

My Family’s Safety Is More Important than San Francisco’s Crazy Gun Laws
Sometimes civil disobedience is necessary.
On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a dreadful Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that upheld a violation of what the Supreme Court has called a “basic right” — the right of self-defense. San Francisco’s police code states that no person may keep a handgun in his residence unless the handgun is either carried on his person or “stored in a locked container or disabled with a trigger lock.”
The Ninth Circuit upheld this restriction despite compelling evidence that this restriction rendered handguns “inoperable for the purpose of immediate self-defense” during the hours when “robberies of occupied dwellings” are most likely to occur.
And so the law remains in effect, with violations punishable by up to six months in jail or a fine of up to $1,000.
If I lived in San Francisco, I would violate that law. San Francisco’s anti-gun ideology is simply not worth risking my family’s safety. I do not have confidence that — even with practice — my wife and older children would be able to unlock a safe as quickly as necessary, under extreme stress (nor am I completely confident that I could do it).
In fact, it’s hard to see a clear downside to violating the law. Yes, there are criminal penalties for noncompliance, but San Francisco isn’t doing house-to-house searches for gun safes. It simply doesn’t have the resources to systematically enforce this law, and it never had any intention of systematically enforcing the law. Instead, it’s counting on the least dangerous gun owners in America (the law-abiding cohort) to voluntarily render themselves more vulnerable.
As the state continues to grow, intruding into homes, regulating speech, and sometimes even compelling participation in immoral acts, more Americans will choose to protect their families and their integrity over conforming to state ideology. Their choice won’t be a matter of political calculation — or part of an effort to build a larger social movement. Instead, it will be a matter of simple moral necessity.
Of course it is.  Malum prohibitum ("wrong only because they prohibit it") laws have been violated in good conscience by saints (David, Elijah, Daniel, Esther, Christ, Peter, Wycliffe, etc.) and the secular alike, especially in time of dire human need.

When the equivalent of the Ferguson, Baltimore, LA, or #dimepiececookout riots come to your neighborhood, town or, God forbid, neck of the woods, you had better be able to defend your family, with deadly force if necessary.  And a gun in a safe or with a trigger lock (!) on it is going to be useless.

And by the way, the piece above mentions Charles Murray’s new book,  By the People: Rebuilding Liberty without Permission.  It's on Ol' Backwoods' reading list.

Yes, armed civil disobedience is becoming more mainstream.  I for one appreciate those who helped get us to this point.   Across the country, from New York, to Connecticut, to Colorado, to Washington State, and now Oregon, gun owners are nullifying these unconstitutional laws by their armed disobedience.  And more will come.

We must.  Ours and our families' lives depend on it.

Anderson's Dry Fire Book: "GET TO WORK!"

The guys at Triangle Tactical turned me on to  Steve Anderson's podcast, "That Shooting Show."  I'm a regular listener now, and by applying his tips, I think I'm becoming a better shooter.

So, I ordered his dry-fire book, "Refinement and Repetition."

Look what came last night:

It's now a permanent fixture in my "dry-fire dojo", as Ben Berry of Triangle Tactical so poetically describes our practice spaces.  Yes, pistol shooting is a martial art, just not a traditional one.

Steve Anderson says at the end of every show, "get to work!" so tonight, I did,

Drill #1 is Sight Picture Acquisition.  Yes, I have work to do.  My best and most consistent par time to draw and get a sight picture that would guarantee me an "A" hit was 1.2 seconds.

But a person has to start somewhere.  I have nowhere to go but up, to be better and faster than I was before.

Are you ready?  Stand by.... BEEP!

The Empire Strikes Back Against American Gun Culture

Welcome, Western Rifle Shooters!  Also, welcome viewers from Facebook, and Matthew Bracken's page, and many others!  Thank you all for linking to this article.

Update 6/10! Alan Gura has joined the fight!

Update 6/15!  Looks like the State Department is trying to weasel out, and say basically 'it means whatever we say it means'.  This will not end well.

Per Alinsky, the Feds are using laws against us.

Newly-posted State Department regulations use ITAR (international arms trade) laws to forbid posting "technical data" about a "defense article" (i.e., a firearm system) on the Internet.  Miguel explains it better than I can.

From NRA-ILA (via Breitbart News):
The proposal would institute a massive new prior restraint on free speech. This is because all such releases would require the ‘authorization’ of the government before they occurred. The cumbersome and time-consuming process of obtaining such authorizations, moreover, would make online communication about certain technical aspects of firearms and ammunition essentially impossible.
What is this technical data" they speak of?
§ 120.10 Technical data.
(a) Technical data means, except as set forth in paragraph (b) of this section:
(1) Information required for the development (see § 120.47) (including design, modification, and integration design), production (see § 120.48) (including manufacture, assembly, and integration), operation, installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul, or refurbishing of a defense article.
Technical data may be in any tangible or intangible form, such as written or oral communications, blueprints, drawings, photographs, plans, diagrams, models, formulae, tables, engineering designs and specifications, computer aided design files, manuals or documentation, electronic media or information gleaned through visual inspection;
This is it.  A "fully-operational Death Star."

This is how the Obama Administration will begin to destroy the gun industry in this country, with a secondary casualty being the gun culture.  It was telegraphed last week by the odious "Father" Pfleger of Chicago, who apparently has an "in" with this administration.  Pfleger said the NRA “will pay pay for the murder of our children.”

They know we have to talk about this stuff in order to sell it, and use it. They know we share recipes
Death Star (
for hand-loading cartridges. They know we post articles about how to field-strip various pistols and rifles.  They know we teach gun maintenance and safety on YouTube.

They know it. And they plan to use every bit of it against us, just as far as they can.

They can't arrest us all, sure. (Ol' Backwoods intends to keep posting what I have been posting.) But they aren't out to get the individuals first. That will come later, after they have rolled up the other opposition.

First, they will scare sites like Blogger and YouTube into taking down all firearms-related content.  You doubt?  David Codrea just lost his livelihood over censure by Leftists.

Next, they will sue the NRA for materials supporting the instruction on use and maintenance of firearms.   For example, American Rifleman magazine.  Or, the NRA Basic Pistol class.  You doubt?  NRA classes seem like common sense to those of us in the gun culture, but these commies know that when people are taught how to use arms, they want to own them for themselves.  They have to attack the problem (as they see it) at the root.  Hence, these new regulations.

Then, they will come for the ammo companies. Those companies will roll over to comply, and quick.  No more muzzle velocity or energy data on their websites.  No more bullet data, either; that's "technical detail". They'll attack reloading, too.  Gone will be the load data books and the ammo loading websites.   They'll even force manufacturers like Hodgdon and Alliant to take load data off the labels on the sides of jars of powder.  They might even try to stop the sale of reloading presses, accessories, and components, all in the name of stopping "international traffic in arms."

After that, the Feds will go after the gun companies. They will try to ensure that there's such a paperwork nightmare that gun sales fall drastically.  Gone will be the maintenance manuals and the military service manuals that used to be freely available on the Net.

Unless we fight this thing, the gun industry in this country will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of FedGov, and will not sell to the American consumer.  Unless we fight, the means and spirit of our American heritage of self-defense will be gone.  We will lose, by default, if we do not fight this.

FIGHT.  Any way you can.  Learn what "samizdat" means.  Defy.  Resist.  Smuggle.

And while you can, push back with public comments.  It's how the M855 ban went down in flames.

Public comments on the proposed changes to ITAR will be accepted until August 3, 2015. E-mail comments to with the subject line indicating the comments concern the ‘‘ITAR Amendment—Revisions to Definitions; Data Transmission and Storage.”

You can't stop the signal, BHO.

UPDATE: Sebastian has much more on how you can send a public comment on these proposed changes to ITAR:

DATES: The Department of State will accept comments on this proposed rule until August 3, 2015.
ADDRESSES: Interested parties may submit comments within 60 days of the date of publication by one of the following methods:
Email: with the subject line, "ITAR Amendment—Revisions to Definitions; Data Transmission and Storage."
Internet: At, search for this notice by using this rule’s RIN (1400–AD70).
Comments received after that date may be considered, but consideration cannot be assured. Those submitting comments should not include any personally identifying information they do not desire to be made public or information for which a claim of confidentiality is asserted because those comments and/or transmittal emails will be made available for public inspection and copying after the close of the comment period via the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls Web site at
Parties who wish to comment anonymously may do so by submitting their comments, leaving the fields that would identify the commenter blank and including no identifying information in the comment itself.
Comments submitted via are immediately available for public inspection.
FIGHT, people.  There is yet time.

Better to fight through commenting that through armed civil disobedience, which is our only remaining choice if public outcry fails.

"Tacticool?" No, Instead of Upgrading Gear, Upgrade YOURSELF and Your Skills

Good article on growing beyond "tacticool"  (Warning, language at link.)
Ol' Backwoods' response follows.

I've been influenced by these guys a lot, who, despite their podcast's name, have grown out of "tacticool".  In fact, they have a slogan I love, and I have a couple shirts that bear:

I've come to believe that.

I don't buy much new gear or guns these days, unless I feel it absolutely necessary.

Rather than upgrade to more "tacticool" gear, I've began to upgrade MYSELF, through "refinement and repetition" of my skills, as champion shooter Steve Anderson puts it, Like you say: "Handgun 1": marksmanship, gun handling, and speed. These are practiced separately, and melded into an integrated whole in the forge of the simulated stress of competition shooting.

I try to dry-fire at least 2 nights a week. I started out working the Stoeger book, but lately, I'm on to Steve Anderson. "Get to work" he always says on "That Shooting Show".  So, I've been getting in 3 nights a week of dry-fire practice. I try to live-fire or shoot a match every weekend.

I believe the "me" upgrade is succeeding. I've lost weight, I feel more alive, my everyday senses and mind seem sharper, and I am shooting a pistol better than anytime in my life.

100% agree with the article: lose the "tacticool", and upgrade yourself. I'm trying to do just that.

"I Love Lucy" Seen by Aliens? Uh, No.

This month is the 58th year since the "I Love Lucy" Show's original run ended in 1957.

Someone on the Free Republic forum mentioned to me that the "I Love Lucy" Show might have been seen by aliens around some far star by now.
No, they can't watch "Lucy" (from "Galaxy Quest" [1999])

Uh, no.  Don't believe everything you see in movie.  Take it from a radio engineer, they can't.

Not every signal is designed for detection in a weak-signal environment, and the black-and-white NTSC television signal during "Lucy's" run in 1951 - 1957 definitely was not.

The transmitted signals of the original "I Love Lucy" episodes are now 63.57 light years (LY) from Earth.  The signal-to-noise ratio of these signals is so low-- and has been for a long time--that no physically-realizable receiver that could be built by our putative alien friends out there to receive them.  (With the physics and engineering we know, granted.)

Yes, really.

Suppose "I Love Lucy" was transmitted by a station that transmitted 1 Megawatt (EIRP) that was pointed toward our alien's system on October 15, 1951.  That's not much of a stretch; there were many VHF TV stations of that power class. Let's suppose it was on VHF TV Channel 6 (no longer used), which was on a frequency of about 87.8 MHz.

Let's further suppose our aliens, being far in advance of humanity, built an antenna dish in orbit 100 km (62 mi) in diameter, designed to point itself straight at us.  A dish of that size -- which no human effort could construct today -- has a calculated gain of 97.3 dB @87.8 MHz.  Compare your lowly log-periodic TV antenna at 11 dB of gain; our aliens' dish is 10^((97.3-11)/10) = 426.6 MILLION times better at "pulling in" signals than your average TV antenna.

At a distance of 63 LY, the free-space path loss is so incredibly high-- 366.9 dB at 87.8MHz.  Even with their monster antenna, the signal the aliens receive would be incredibly weak:  -199.6 dBm.  With this weak signal, there would be no possible way for the receiver to detect the amplitude-modulated video signal in the 6 MHz-wide TV channel, even if you immersed the receiver's first amplifier stage in liquid helium, a few degrees above absolute zero.  The thermal noise floor at -270°C is -125.8 dBm.  An NTSC video signal requires at least 50 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for studio-quality video, and roughly 20 dB for snow-filled ghosts. Our aliens only have -125.8 - (-199.6) = -73.8 dB SNR.

No "Lucy" for them!

Even fictional Alpha Centaurians (4.3LY away) couldn't have seen the first "Lucy" episode in 1955; they'd receive it on their 62-mile-wide orbital dish at about -176.2 dBm, which gives them a non-usable -50.4 dB SNR.  Remember, they need +20 dB SNR for snow-filled reception.

Suppose they just wanted to hear Lucy's cackle, instead of seeing her smiling face.   Well, NTSC TV sound is modulated using FM, in about a 100 kHz bandwidth, using a ±25 kHz deviation.  Even if the aliens knew this ahead of time, and used frequency-compressive feedback in their receiver to reduce the speech bandwidth down to 60 kHz, this gives them a noise floor and SNR improvement of only 10 x log10(6/0.06) or 20 dB.  Even the Alpha Centaurians in 1954 would have had a -30.4 dB SNR on Lucy's voice.  And FM needs a 20 dB SNR just to beat scratchy old AM voice quality.

If the aliens aren't in our Solar System, or very nearby, they aren't going to see  our TV transmissions, historic or modern.   And them's the facts.

Ya Got a Drone On Ya, Jeh!

Sub-tyrant* for "Homeland Security" Jeh Johnson is worried about drones.  Not the government's drones, you understand, no, in his view, government must have a monopoly on surveillance.  No, Sub-tyrant Johnson is worried about drones in the hands of private citizens, Ol' Backwoods suspects, because they could be used to watch him and his fellow sub-tyrants.

"When the government fears the people, there is liberty." -- John Basil Barnhill, in a published 1914 debate with socialist Henry Tichenor.

Sub-tyrant Johnson, as quoted in the Weekly Standard, because his original statement was on a cable channel nobody watches:
Sub-tyrant Jeh Johnson,
DHS chief Jeh Johnson agreed with Chuck Todd that drones could make protecting 2016 presidential candidates more difficult. And, Johnson said as an example, he was a giving a speech recently when he looked up to see "a little drone flying over my head."
Yeah, I bet he's so worried about the 2016 presidential candidates, given that (if the Constitution as amended is followed) his regime's power will be coming to an end.

More likely, he's worried that the American people will record video-- and broadcast it over the internet -- from their drones, catching various sub-tyrants in acts of tyranny and treason to the Constitution.

Drones, like small arms, are a mighty advantage to people faced with government tyranny.  If you can record video of the tyranny being done, oppose it with deadly force, and then have a way to broadcast the tyranny far and wide, well, governments worldwide quail in fear of that kind of citizenry.
*Sub-tyrant - Ol' Backwoods new term for Obama's minions and enablers of tyrannical statism worldwide. Like it?

"El Pres" & Target Stands

"El Presidente" IPSC Classifier
"El Presidente", a shooting drill created by Col. Jeff Cooper some fifty-ish years ago, is still part of IPSC, as a classifier stage.  It consists of two rounds on three targets spaced 1-3 yards apart (depending on the sport), a magazine reload, then two rounds again on each of the three targets. Par is getting all 12 rounds on the "A" zone of the target, in 10 seconds or less.  See the diagram at right (hat tip: Handguns Magazine).

Ol' Backwoods is dry-fire and live-fire practicing the "El Pres" these days to try to become a better pistol shooter.  It has all the elements required to be a better shooter: sight (re) alignment, trigger control, and magazine reloads.

The drill is shot left-to-right, then reload, then left-to-right again, with 2 rounds on each target as it is passed.  Watch the video of champion shooter Max Michel doing the drill, first at Grand Master speed, then at C-class shooter speed.  The latter is more like Ol' Backwoods' speed!

To be able to shoot the drill at the outdoor range, or on private country land, I'm building 3 target stands, like this one:

To build one of these target stands, you'll need:
  • About 12' of 1-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe; the longest pieces are the uprights, at about 20" long;
  • (4) 1-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC Tees;
  • (1) 8' 2"x2" lumber, cut in half.   Actually, these are around 1.5" square, and are small enough with some trimming to fit tightly in the PVC Tees.
  • (4)  1-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC 90-degree elbows, to use as "feet"
  • PVC cement, screws
  • Masonite (which I used) or cardboard backing, so cheap paper practice targets can be used.
I've recently gotten Ben Stoeger's dry-fire book, and have been listening to Triangle Tactical Podcast a lot.  Luke from Triangle Tactical is an acquaintance of mine, from my GRNC days.

Happy shooting!
